Family, friends remember Brittany Murphy at funeral service

December 25, 2009 |  2:01 pm

Brittany Murphy was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills on Thursday, with friends and family recalling the late actress' life and work.

"A bright light that lit the world is forever dimmed, but will live on in the hearts of those that Brittany touched," her family said in a statement. "Brittany was an incredibly loving and passionate person and an artist to her core."

According to the Associated Press, the Christmas Eve ceremony lasted into the evening. A Christian minister and a rabbi presided over the service and guests sang "Amazing Grace" at the grave site.

The memorial was "very nice, very respectful," longtime family friend Alex Ben Block told the AP, which also reported that Murphy's husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, spoke about their relationship and gave an emotional eulogy.

Murphy died Sunday of a sudden cardiac arrest, officials said. She was 32. A law enforcement source, who declined to be named because of the ongoing investigation, said Murphy suffered internal bleeding before her death.

It was unclear whether an underlying medical condition might have caused or contributed to her death. She was taking prescription drugs for medical ailments, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Department officials said today that they have finished their initial investigation into Murphy's death and concluded that there were no signs that a crime occurred.

The medical examiner has completed an autopsy, but an official cause of death will be deferred until tests determine what substances, if any, were in her system.
