Ex-Marine who survived three tours in Iraq is slain while installing cable TV in Victorville

A former U.S. Marine who survived several tours of duty in Iraq and a knife attack at his Phelan home a few months ago was violently beaten to death with a hammer while installing cable at a Victorville home, authorities said. A relative of the homeowners has been arrested in the attack.

Trevor Neiman, 25, a Charter Communications Cable installer, was found beaten and bloody by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies who responded to the home shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday.

While Neiman was working on the cable at the home in the 15200 block of  San Jose Drive, a man attacked and repeatedly beat him with a small hammer, authorities said.

"He was doing a cable installation. There was no exchange of words. There was nothing that occurred before the unprovoked attack," said Jody Miller, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Miller said witnesses told investigators there was no indication of what set off the attack. Paramedics rushed Neiman to Victor Valley Community Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

After the attack, investigators say, the suspect fled the home.

Relatives and other witnesses quickly identified Johnny Acosta, 45, as being at the home at the time of the beating. The family had moved in just days before. While detectives were searching for Acosta, he contacted the San Bernardino County sheriff’s dispatch center, gave his location and surrendered to detectives without a struggle.

Costa, of Hesperia, was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. He is due to appear in a Victorville court Thursday.

Miller says the motive for the attack was unclear.

Just five months ago, Neiman, an athletic, 6-foot-4 dirt bike and VW Beetle fanatic, survived a knife attack at his Phelan home during a party, Miller said.

That attack left him with several stab wounds, a collapsed lung and broken ribs. On his MySpace page, Neiman sarcastically wrote: "Never bring your fist to a knife fight."

Several pictures on his photo pages documented his head, body and legs wounds. Three people were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the attack.

Neiman, who was married, served with the Marine Corps 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines India Company. He served in the corps from October 2003 to February 2008, with three tours in Iraq. His MySpace page honors some of his comrades who were killed in Iraq.

Mr Acosta should get the death penalty, immediately. Die scum die

It's not racial profiling. It's criminal profiling, which is legit and necessary. I would hope that if you have a "description" of a criminal, and you see someone (anyone) who fits that description, there would be an investigation. Ironically, the criminal may fit of the same ethnic group of the victim. And... if the person stopped is not the "criminal," he should not be mad at the police. He should be mad at the "suspect" who caused his ethnic group to come into such negative light.

Let's send him to Iraq with a target on his back.

this takes my breath away..

Unless he was dishonorably discharged, he's a "former Marine". There are no "ex-Marines". Happy birthday USMC. I say use this guy as target practice for the snipers at Pendleton: "You can run, but you'll only die tired."

On this of all days the 234th anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps we read the likes of this?
Disgusting state of affairs...I cant wait to read what worthwhile contributions Acosta has dedicated himself to?

agreed. what a worthless human being. neiman is my hero.

maybe karma for killing so many kids and women in Iraq?

thank you for protecting my children and defending this great country. you are in are prayers

Just a Marine trying to transition to civilian life...and this is what he gets in the end.

He was a former Marine...and although this is written in the body of the article, it would show more honor and respect to also write it in the title. This is a terrible tragedy and one that hits way too close to home.

Once a Marine, Always a Marine.

Something must have happened between the two. How could he just beat the man to death like that for nothing. Sad, he serves 3 tours in Iraq and get's murdered in Victorville.

What the heck

Trevor Neiman probably discovered an illegal cable hookup and somebody was unhappy about the sudden disconnection.

I cannot imagine that a Marine would let himself be attacked by a small hammer.

It's likely that the ladder was pushed out from under Neiman and when he fell to the ground, he was attacked as he lay on the ground before he could defend himself.

I hope that another country doesn't claim that the alleged was not given his right to legal advice by a foreign consulate.

It happened before in Texas by the consulate citing the 1963 Vienna Convention and was subsequently upheld by the International Court of Justice.

this is the most pathetic act by some dirt-bag - why oh why did this have to happen and why wasn't anyone there to prevent or avert this senseless horrific crime?! what are you going to do for the family Charter Cable? I'm so sorry at the loss of Mr. Neiman and my heart goes out to the family -- I'm quite sure his former comrades would love to take justice into their own hands once they learn what happened - this guy deserves the death penalty - what an animal and what a coward!

Curiously, no mention of a 'hate-crime' was made.

Perhaps if he was a homosexual....

That just made me sick. This is when someone rates a death penalty. What kind of man, hits someone with a hammer while his back was turned.

God bless you and your family. All are in our thoughts and prayers.

Semper Fi

This is the kind of thing you read and just makes you think there really isn't a god.

I agree. Execute him immediately.

I'm sure we'll find out that Acosta was a drug abuser with a lengthy arrest record...Again, why we tolerate these misfits of society to exist around productive members of society is beyond me...Two strikes and it's to the work farm for 25 years...

Karma? You think he deserved to die for serving his country? Don know where you get off but That was my brother and he loved life and people he did an honorable thing serving his country so you could post stupid comments like that. please pray for my family they are not doing well with this tragety.

It sounds like karma and Acosta are cut from the cloth, both unemployed criminals...misfits of society...

Trevor was a good friend of mine. We served together on all 3 combat tours. We've trained together since boot camp and SOI. Semper Fidelis brother. 3/1 will miss you forever. Dawn, if you need anything let me know. 3/1 is here for your family. 3/1 is your family.

i think what happened to that soilder is messed up. our soilders are out there fighting reguardless of what we as the people think and yet he comes home to get killed. whats supposed to be the saftey we have soilders that want to come home for saftey but yet here are these people killing them in contridicts what is supposed to be the safe side.
