Member of Avenues gang is sentenced in girl's murder

A member of one of Los Angeles' oldest and most notorious street gangs was sentenced today to 82 years to life in prison for the murder of a 14-year-old girl and the attempted murder of a second victim.

Eduardo Ruiz, 18, a member of the Avenues gang, was convicted in September of first-degree murder in the shooting of Cynthia Perez, who was struck by a stray bullet as she sat in a car at a Highland Park stoplight.

Ruiz, who was 16 at the time of the May 2008 shooting, was walking near the intersection of York Boulevard and Avenue 64 when he stared at his intended male victim, who was in a car. When the man looked back, Ruiz walked into the street and fired several shots, prosecutors said.

One of the shots missed, however, striking Perez — who was a passenger in an adjacent car — in the eye.

The Avenues gang, which has a number of cliques in Northeast Los Angeles, is named after the avenues that cross Figueroa. The group has longstanding ties with the Mexican Mafia prison gang and has been responsible for some of the area's most sensational murders.

In 1995, Avenues gang members shot and killed 3-year-old Stephanie Kuhen, whose family made a wrong turn onto a dead-end street in Cypress Park.

Several gang members were charged in connection with the 2008 murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Juan Abel Escalante, who was gunned down outside his parents' home in Cypress Park.

The gang, which police say has several hundred members, has been the target of city injunctions and federal investigations dating back a decade.

Why only 82 years--a figure that will likely be reduced to a fraction of that. Who was the prosecutor/idiot that decided this convict gets a lesser sentence than his victim?

Just waiting for the Tookie Williams crowd.

what a waste...his mother shoulda swallowed him

Publishing a picture of a convicted murderer is not a hate-crime!

In this case looks like an accident and not a crime. Probably the one that the shot was addressed too was the same kind of undesirable that the one that shoot. Whatever I bet my money the guy will not be too long in jail since the judges are becoming softer (afraid?) everyday more. Lot of year in jails with more parole to (apparently) new christians, writers and model prisoners that when back to the street are worst that in the time they got into the system. It should be called wimp justice.

It is long time for some of these alleged gang members were made to disappear, be realistic who of any importance would miss them?
Pack these bastards in a plane and toss them into the ocean about 50miles out.

All you liberals have blood on your hands letting this human garbage run wild in this country.

Wow!, It's so good to know that our justice system does work for us, and I really hope that more cases like this could be prosecuted to the fullest stint of the law, that is what our tax dollars are for, and I really don't mind a bit knowing my tax dollars are well spent like this.

So long scumbag

So a 16 year old is sentence to life in prison for accidently killing someone? Seriously?? This boy must be very Mexican and the girl must be Elizabeth Smart level white. Why is he even being charged as an adult? Something is seriously wrong here.

send all of the gang members to iraq and afganastan and let them kill themselves there so the innocent killings stop here

I HONESTLY DON'T THINK THAT'S RIGHT THAT HE IS BEING CHARGED AS AN ADULT HE IS STILL A CHILD!!!!!!

gangmembers have no feelings and no moral or self caring for other humanbiengs .. nomatter how long anyone convicts them in prison and even if they die there it will always go on and more and more people will die

LA is so poor and pathetic not like SAN DIEGO. Take a tip from your neighbors to the south, LA and learn how to live in a city that is worthy to be called the finest city

Why is it that the suspects in the " 49 street massacre " were NOT charged with a hate crime...

BLACKS are racist too...

And as for the 1995 shooting of Stephanie Kuhn, her parents were there buying CRACK and they did NOT make a wrong turn. They lived in that neighborhood for years so they knew exactly where they were going.

he deserves more than 82 years!!!
he killed a innocent child that was minding her
own business..
rest in peace
cynthia
we love you our angel in the sky

JUSTICE WAS SERVE!!!!

Thank you Mr. G. I agree with you completely...We know the truth about Stephanie Kuhan - all of this started with that "wrong way" lie . The family lived two blocks away, they knew the area well and they were there to buy crack. Thank you for telling the TRUTH.
