Second suspect arrested in alleged gang rape of Bay Area high school student

A second suspect was arrested tonight in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl who police say was assaulted at Richmond High School for at least two hours while witnesses watched and did not call authorities.

The suspect, a 15-year-old student, was booked on one count of felony sexual assault, said Lt. Mark Gagan. Police earlier had arrested a 19-year-old former student on rape, robbery and kidnapping charges in connection with the attack, which took place Saturday night during the school's homecoming dance.

The victim, who was waiting for a ride from her father after leaving the dance, was taken to a dark alley on the other side of the school around 9:30 p.m. and raped, beaten and robbed by about seven attackers, police said.

The ordeal lasted 2 to 2 1/2 hours, Gagan said, during which time more than a dozen witnesses passed by or watched what was going on but did not call the police.

The girl's father was looking for her while the attack was taking place, police said.

Police were finally called after a female student overhead people talking about the rape. She called 911 and told dispatchers what she had heard, Gagan said.

When officers arrived on the scene, the assault was still going on. Several suspects fled as officers found the girl naked from the waist up, Gagan said.

"She was unconscious," he said.

He said investigators based their account of the incident on an interview with the girl and statements from several people who witnessed or were involved with the assault. The girl remained hospitalized tonight.

Sure. The rapists are animals. We get that.

But the witnesses/passersby that did nothing? Cowards AND animals.

Have we lost everything we once held dear? Without honesty, integrity, compassion and honor we are reduced to animal savagery. The attitude of the barbarians that committed this act, as well as the ones that sat by and did nothing, has become common place in America today.

When it becomes common for the good to do nothing in the face of unspeakable attrocities, we have lost all. These are the last days of the once great American society. May God have mercy on our souls!

Round'em up; Shoot them in the head, and have them hanging in public for a week - that should ensure they'll never attack and rape another girl again, AND, clearly show any other low-lifes what they have coming should they even THINK of rape. Next...

Calling these people animals is a slur against animals.

this proves that people are not afraid of the consequences for their actions. our judicial system is so messed up. we are way to nice to criminals. whether it's at home or in our jails, people need to experience a type of punishment where they will think twice the next time they want to commit a crime. seriously people, what the heck is a "time out" that today's parent(s) give their children? why do criminals live a more lavish life than the homeless? being politically correct has a lot to do with the disfunctionality of our society.

Please keep us UPDATED and follow these SCUMBAGS through the judicial process...IF they don't pay for this crime "old testament" style, I for one will be truly disgusted with our judicial system especially here in Los Angeles.

These are very serious crimes...There should be plenty of DNA evidence for easy convictions...My heart goes out to the victim and her family; however, I'm very happy about the violent criminals who will eventually get some hard/violent prison time...

You figure everyone had cell phones and nobody called the police...All witnesses that took no action were actually lookouts and should be treated as such...Not as much time as the actual rapist, but they need some prison time...

Everyone involved needs to get hammered, the maximum penalties, just to make an example of them...GOOD RIDDANCE...

Inconceivable. Why do minorities have to give us such a bad name? Richmond is mostly minorities, Latinos and African Americans. I'm a minority, so you can't call me a racist.

Let me guess the area demographics...

Bring back the death penalty, I hope these sub humans are tried as adults and thrown behind bars where they can experience thier own gang rape.

At least one young lady had the courage to call the police.

This is the second time a hispanic female has been gang raped by black men this year in northern California. If the tables were turned and this was a gang of hispanic men gang raping a black female this would be on every news channel in America. Why do we tolerate such behavior from one group? But , if others do it we expect the full arm of justice and personal responsiblility.

Camera's would be installed at all schools so that students know that they will be videotaped if they commit crimes. Hopefully all of those involved will be caught , and justice served. But this incident raises so many questions about how anyone could just walk by while a young girl was being attacked. Clearly with cell phones handy for all , why didn't anyone just call the police to save this girl? That school needs to have some serious meetings with its student body.

'Let me guess the area demographics...'

Let me guess why this article has no pictures or names of suspects over 18.

Wow...pretty brutal, to say the least.

Absolutely disgusting. Where was the father who was supposedly going to pick up his daughter for these 2.5 hrs?

Whoopi, can we have a comment on this please?

Welcome to Contra Costa County City of Richmond............

The Rapist will need Roman Polonski to help them with this case.

My heart and prayers go out to this young girl and her family. What an unimaginable and horrific tragedy.

What the hell is with "alleged" rape????? Get it straight: there may be "alleged" perpetuators, if you're afraid of libel lawsuits, but there are no "alleged" victims!!

Sometimes I think the Middle East has the right idea. Public executions would make these thugs think twice. Bring back the death penalty. We need it now more than ever! I've lost so much faith in our judicial system, they'll probably get a slap on the wrist and be able to live their life freely if they are under 18, IF there is a Trial at all. I'm disgusted by what CA has become, on all levels. I hope this girl gets the help she is going to need - (insurance or no health insurance).

Now I know why my mom doesnt like it when Im waiting alone after school. What the saddest thing about this is that people were passing by and no one did anything! Karma is a . . . Although I would hate to hear about another case like this.

These animals want to act like animals, let them all be tried as adults! Examples need to be shown that this behavior will not be tolarated

Steve Rodriguez, it clearly says Richmond High School...in the first line of the article. If you can't read, there's no way you know anything about San Francisco's immigration laws.

This is terrible. Whom do we blame for the cruelty that has been allowed to escalate in this country? Lazy educators, too many illegal aliens, too much violence on videos and television, poor parenting, preoccupation among Republicans and Christian fundamentalists with abortion and gay rights and acceptance of 'boys will be boys' when it comes to fighting on video and assaulting other people? The list of those at blame is long. Please, let's not allow the courts to ignore the permanent damage done to this young girl. And could we please start concentrating on the real issues that face this country, like better public school systems.
