Elderly man tries to rob San Diego bank
For the second time in three days, a San Diego bank has been hit by a robber in his 70s. The cases are not related, officials said.
A short, heavyset man using a cane and dressed in a red Hawaiian shirt presented a demand note to a manager this morning at the Bank of America branch in the City Heights neighborhood. The robber threatened to detonate a bomb in a briefcase unless he received the money.
When the manager left, allegedly to get money, the robber walked out, leaving the briefcase in the bank.
After a massive search, a suspect was arrested while lying on the porch of a nearby house, possibly exhausted by the walk. He was estimated to be 5-foot-8, 240 pounds. His name has not yet been released.
Bomb squad specialists inspected the briefcase and found no explosive, officials said. No one was hurt during the incident.
On Saturday, a man in his 70s robbed the San Diego National Bank in La Jolla. That robber, described as lean and 6-foot or taller, had an oxygen bottle over his shoulder and a plastic tube running to his nose.
No one has been arrested in that case, the FBI and San Diego police said.
