Lethal levels of propofol found in Michael Jackson's body, affidavit says [Updated]

MurrayL.A. County coroner's officials found lethal levels of the powerful anesthetic propofol after examining Michael Jackson's body, according to a search warrant affidavit unsealed today in Houston.

According to the search warrant, Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, told detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department that he had been treating Jackson for insomnia for about six weeks. He had been giving Jackson 50 milligrams of propofol every night using an intravenous line, according to the court records.

But Murray told detectives that he feared Jackson was forming an addiction and began trying to wean the pop star off the drugs. He lowered the dosage to 25 milligrams and mixed it with two other sedatives, lorazepam and midazolam. On June 23, two days before Jackson's death, he administered those two medications and withheld the propofol.

On the morning Jackson died, Murray tried to induce sleep without using propofol, according to the affidavit. He said he gave Jackson valium at 1:30 a.m. When that didn't work, he said, he injected lorazepam intravenously at 2 a.m. At 3 a.m., when Jackson was still awake, Murray administered midazolam.

Over the next few hours, Murray said he gave Jackson various drugs. Then at 10:40 a.m., Murray administered 25 milligrams of propofol after Jackson repeatedly demanded the drug, according to the court records.

[Updated at 12:45 p.m.: Although Murray acknowledged to police that he administered propofol, authorities said they could find no evidence that he had purchased, ordered or obtained the medication under his medical license or Drug Enforcement Administration tracking number. However, police detectives saw about eight bottles of propofol in the house along with other vials and pills that had been prescribed to Jackson by Dr. Murray, Dr. Arnold Klein and Dr. Allan Metzger.

Other drugs that were confiscated in the search included valium, tamsulosin, lorazepam, temazepam, clonazepam, trazodone and tizanidine. They also found propofol in Murray’s medical bag. Murray told detectives that he was not the first doctor to administer the powerful anesthetic to Jackson.

At least two unidentified doctors gave Jackson propofol in Germany. Between March and April 2009, Murray said he called Las Vegas doctor David Adams at Jackson’s request to arrange for Adams to administer propofol. Murray said he was present at a cosmetologist’s office, where Adams used propofol to sedate Jackson. Since he began treating Jackson, Murray said he repeatedly asked the pop star what other physicians were treating Jackson and what drugs they were prescribing. But Jackson declined to provide the information, Murray told authorities.

Murray said he noticed injection marks on Jackson’s hands and feet. When he asked Jackson about them, the pop star told him he had been given a “cocktail” to help him. In addition to Murray, authorities subpoenaed medical records from Dr. Arnold Klein, Dr. Allan Metzger and Dr. David Adams, the affidavit states. They also asked for medical records from Dr. David Slavitt, who conducted the independent medical examination of Jackson for Anschuntz Entertainment Group, Dr. Randy Rosen and nurse practitioner Cherilyn Lee. They also subpoenaed records from Dr. Mark Tadrissi, who stored medical records with Adams. ]

Murray has already acknowledged obtaining and administering propofol to Jackson the morning that the pop star died. In an interview with police, Murray told them that he had left Jackson alone under the influence of the medication to make telephone calls to his Houston office and family members.

When he returned, he discovered Jackson was not breathing. He performed CPR, and one of Jackson’s staff members called 911. The 50-year-old pop star was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center, where he was later declared dead. Much of the investigation has focused on propofol — a drug typically administered by anesthesiologists during surgery — and whether Murray’s decision to give it to Jackson as a sleep aid outside a hospital setting reaches a level of negligence required for an involuntary manslaughter charge.

This is what you get for depending on drugs. Incase you haven't noticed by the death of Michael Jackson, drugs are dangerous. I'm a doctor and I suffer insomnia too, and so do a lot of my patients, but I would not be inclined to prescribe anything stronger than Diazapam and Ambiem. If they still suffer from the Insomnia, then they can go to a sleep lab and find out what's wrong with them. Typically, the low dose of Diazapam and Ambiem work to relieve a lot of chronic insomnia cases. Most insomnia cases are caused by CSA, or Central Sleep Apnea. Had he went to a sleep lab, this man's death may have been avoided with a CPAP and a small dose of Diazapam and one Ambiem.

If Murray told investigators that Jackson would not tell him what drugs other doctors had given him, but he did tell Murray the medicine given to him by Klein and Metzger or Dr. David Adams was not working, the affidavit said.

Did Murray at anytime consult with Klein or Metzger as to what med's MJ was on?

Wonder what kind of malfunction insurance does Dr. Murray have covering unprofessional conduct and whom paid for it?

I have worked in an Operating Room. Propofol in nothing to mess with. Anastheisiologist use it to put patients under, and then put an LMA (breathing tube down their throat) while the patient was assisted by a ventalator. And under the whatchful eye of the Dr. the whole entire time i.e. monitors. etc.. and then coming out of it, was even worse. And Propofol knocks you out quick, its sometimes a white milk looking substance, and when the Drs. inject into a patients IV, and under within seconds. Very scarey!!!

What can anyone say? MONEY< MONEY

It is another sad story of mismanagement of ones body administration and acting against the nature. However the situation was changed by his own belief when he tried to find religious way to solve his own problems. He was too late and the Buddhism had much more things to offer him. Good example to other busy artists!

I do not think the doctor killed him on purpose, but man his actions show poor judgement. I think they should make a example out of this doctor and throw him under the jail. I think in most cases like this one nothing never happens to the doctor. None of these doctors cared about micheal jackson they just cared about how much money he was giving them. The same thing happen to elvis pressly, so something needs to be done about these doctors over medicating patients. I guess they will just blamed this all on micheal jackson and let the doctor off with a warrning.

WHY DID HE KILL MACHEL JACKSON HE WAS ALSONE AND STILL IS

I belive jackson was a drug addict, but Murry is certainly the fall guy becsue he couldnt tell micheal no! in this case everybody is saying jackson is not a innocent victum, but to me he is all of these doctors new jackson was a addict. Murry new jackson was a addict he lived with the man,but him and other doctors who treated jackson kept pushing the drugs inabling him for money.Murry was deeply in dept and needed every bit of money that jackson was paying him. With this being said of course micheal jackson was a victum to the doctors who was treating him and giving him what he wanted because of the money.

Anybody could look at micheal jackson and tell he was sick and on something. If you look at his pictures year to year you no jackson was taking drugs. Look at the way he messed up his face with all the surgeries he had, and belive me he had to be high as a kite to mess his face up the way he did. Murry knew this man was a addict even stevey wounder could see micheal jackson was a addict.

MJ was warned about the risks of taking Diprivan and Propofol. That does not exclude Dr. Murray and his negligence. Just the same, MJ was an adult and should have been fully aware of the dangers of the drugs he took or was given. Unfortunately for MJ, he completely trusted this doctor to do his job and to do it safely. MJ made some bad decisions and it finally caught up with him. Dr. Murray must be held accountable as well. There should be no excuses for illegally using a very dangerous and powerful drug that results in a person's death.

YO THIS MAN IS CRAZY LIKE....WORD HE SHOULD BE THROWN IN JAIL........ ALL I WANNA WRITE IS THAT MICHEAL.......OMG MICHEAL YOU WERE GONE TOO SOON........I WILL NEVER FORGET THE MOONWALK AND THE ROBOT DANCES YOU DID MAN......I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS LIKE FIVE OR SIX AND YOUR VIDEO SMOOTH CRIMINAL FIRST CAME AND I SAW YOU DID THE LEAN I WAS LIKE YO THIS MAN HAVE MAGIC POWERS! OH NO HE DIDNT JUST LEAN FORWARD LIKE THAT! LOL I USE TO REVEIW THAT PART, OVER AND OVER AGAIN SO I CAN LEARN HOW TO DO IT MYSELF AND WHEN I DID IT I WOULD FALL RIGHT FLAT ON MY FACE AND MY SIS WOULD LAUGH AT ME, AND I WOULD SAY "IM OKAY" LMFAO BUT SERIOUSLY GUYS IM NOT SLOW OR TRYING TO BE BUT IS MJ REALLY GONE?, LIKE SERIOUSLY I CANT STOP CRYING AND JUST HOPE ANYDAY, ANYSOON, THE NEWS WOULD POP UP AND SAY OH IT WAS A RUMOR OR A SETUP OR A PART FOR HIS THIS IS IT TOUR......LIKE SERIOUSLY I CANT FACE THE FACT THAT YOU ARE GONE......LIKE SERIOUSLY I REMEMBER HAVING FANTASIES OF DANCING WITH MJ ON MY WEDDING NIGHT LOL.......LIKE MICHEAL I LOVE MISS YOU AND YOU WILL ALWAYS I MEAN ALWAYS LAND A BEAUTIFUL PEACEFUL PLACE IN MY HEART........AND GUYS OR FANS OF MJ.........MICHEAL JOSEPH JAACKSON IS NOT THE KING OF POP........YEA I SAID NOPE HES NOT.............................................HES THE GOD OF MUSIC AND CANT NOBODY REPLACE I MEAN ANYBODY.........GOODBYE 4EVER MICHEAL JOSEPH JACKSON 1958-2009

That's way too many drugs for anyone to survive! Poor MJ, he needed rehab. Doctors in this country need to take training in alternative medicine, which is a lot safer than taking all these strong medications. If MJ had taken Tryptophan, which always makes people sleep, he'd be alive today. It's a totally natural substance and it would have knocked him out if he took enough It's also used to treat anxiety. I've taken it for sleep and it works amazingly well.

What a shame -- that doctor was as hooked on drugs as MJ was.

give this crazy dr. the same drugs so he could feel the same..another dr. Kevorkian......

No, none of this brings Michael back but it adds my stand against the things that are not true.

And....why when two days ago the "Dr." uses two drugs to induce sleep this time does he use VALIUM first along with a full range and different sequence of other drugs. Just becaue Michael once had a problem doesn't show in any way that he had a drug addiction now unless maybe unknowingly he was being relapsed. I could shove valium into anyone for a period of 6 weeks and they would become a new addict. What exactly was given to "relax" Michael before sleep. Why? If Michael knew the that when the drip his is arm he was out (Lee interview) then why would he need anything ahead of this? Did he know? I smoked pot once about thirty years ago but that doesn't make me an addict nor does it mean I use today. Anyone who knows any addicts also knows that they know exactly what works, what is contained, how it works, what doesn't work, what to combine, what not. They are chemists in their own right. If Michael was addicted during the Pepsi period, or during the trial, he would have clearly known the combinations.Things do not add up. Period.

Could it be from the full physical received that "the others" knew Michaels condition and were trying to sort out exactly how to make this all happen since many colluded together to get him to die all for their own reasons. Was he really in good health at that physical? If he was, he looked terrible at the announcement. Why? How did the change happen so fast? Some revenge, some greed, some power...I like another post I read that talks about set ups. Making a call or keeping someone distracted while they are making a call but should be attending to a patient is also murder.

If we have the technology to let Pepsi know exactly how the audience responds to commercials... how many times we blicks, when the urge sets in and the emotional reaction begins, how our chemistry changes, how our breathing changes, ofcouse there is the knowledge to orchestrate this. Why was the police so slow to take action and investigate? How easy it is to do a quick smear campaign via the press and internet.
Think of all the magazines and the profit they are making by dragging all the possible angles through the mud. The advertisers are makeing tons, the music industry...all the side businesses that are jumping on the wagon. So very many people are benefiting that may not be the direct recipients of the will. Taking care of his children and mother were a good thing. It also throws suspicion in the wrong place. Like LaToya said there were many involved not just this Quack. By the way, who is paying his legal fees? Also, is there really no new will or did it just disappear. I heard this will was not notorized. Michael was a very, very savey businessman. Anyone who listens to his music and the words can hear the extreme level of political intellect..not just about his musical talent. He was murdered and not just by this man. There is no question in my heart while I may not have the proof. I doubt we will get them all but in the end they will get their unrighteous reward.

In the meantime I do think we the fans need to stay vigilent to help his kids. For all Michael has done for me personally, and I never met him, it's the least I can do is stand for the truth and the sake of his children's memories of him.

It’s amazing to me that so many people are quick to call Michael a drug addict, when this has not been confirmed. You do not know that for sure, all you are doing is stating speculation. People had monetary interest in trying to make it seem as if Michael was some strung out addict. But have you noticed that since the autopsy reports have concluding in the last couple of weeks, that they have been focusing less on the whole drug addict theory and more on Dr. Conrad Murray? It's because based on what they found there isn't any proof that he was an "addict". However, it is shown that Murray was negligent and took advantage of a man who obviously suffered from years of pain and insomnia. How the hell is it possible for a doctor to administer that many sedatives in a few short hours then top it off with propofol??? And then leave him alone??? He should have known better, and that is the reason why he is under fire right now. Michael would probably still be here if it was not for this man’s greed, which took precedence over the health and safety of Michael.

As the doctor should've been aware of any dangers the mixed medications could cause, I imagine he believed the combination and doses of drugs was "safe." I think because Jackson was so adamant about getting the drugs, possibly without acknowledging the damage the constant medication was causing his body, he inadvertently caused his death. The doctor would've been wise not to prescribe or administer any drugs at all; rather, insist Jackson receive some sort of psychological treatment, because from all I've read, it sounds like Jackson may have been addicted to prescription drugs.

Not that it's anyone's fault in particular - hypothetically, Jackson couldn't sleep, no typical sleep aids were helping, s0 doctors prescribed exceptionally strong, addictive drugs. Doctors realized Jackson was taking drugs too frequently, stopped giving them - so Jackson found new doctors to provide him with meds. Jackson refused to tell the new doctors about his past treatment, as they'd surely deny further prescription drugs.

Complications from so much drug use could've had these severe effects at virtually any time - unfortunately, this particular doctor was present when Jackson's body could take no more. And I'm betting the doctor second-guessed himself many times, wondering if it was his fault, his combinations and doses - but I don't think so.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

What is the primary reason for Dr. Murray's refusal to sign the death certificate?

From the very first day it HAD to be this Dr. 1st thing you learn in cpr is put the person on a hard surface. Doesn't matter if he is 50 lbs or 150 lbs. He goes to the floor. We are talking about a Medical Doctor...another thing with the meds being given....they DO NOT GIVE YOU SLEEP....not rem sleep....they make it worse. The ativan will relax you...make you drowsy too....but it is not a sleep medication. The midazolam, also known as Versed-the memory loss drug, is also an anethesia. It is given to patients going through a trauma. It is what they gave my mom. She went into the hospital for a hernia repair and came out with a colostomy. For the first week they gave her versed. Every morning I would come into see her and she wouldn't remember that I had been there the day before, you see I lived 2000 miles away. But she didn't remember the trauma she was going through either.

Out of these 3 medications I do not see ONE insomnia medication. There were others found in the house.....but none that this DOCTOR said he was using that night. IF MJ was taking these anesthetics....His mind was really being messed with. The scariest thing is....How much did he really remember? These were all mind altering drugs..and as we have all found out...lethal. Also, there was not a "pain" medication among them.

Something fishy?

I'd say so.

I am not a Michael Jackson fan. But I am deeply worried how Michael Jackson was treated by his doctors. Dr. C. Murray did not do propper Livesaving, as intubation in order to make sure he gets oxygen, which would had been easy to any qulaified doctor. Giving him drogs, the way Dr. Murray did, on that day MJ died, is simply unbelievabel - if not to say a crime. Any doctor who made his Hippocratic Oath will be aschamed of a College like Dr. C. Murray is. I deeply hope Dr. Murray will gaine justice by what he had done to his patient.
As h e new, Michael Jackson was a addict, he should have treatet him as a addict and schould have installed medical help for him, as it is commen medical standard, which I suggest is known in Amerika as well.
Michael Jackson was urgendly in need of medical help, which was not given to him.
This matter of fact was neglected badly. You should not blame MJ but all the others who draw money for themselves even in Michael Jackson greatest need of help. Doctors who do not help someone, who urgently needs medical care, should give their License away - for the rest of their lifes. And so should Dr. Murray!!

this whole thing sound's fishy if you ask me..it sound's like some very serious drama behind the curtain's..that are just not revealed ..and for good reason..i just wish that this is all one big joke.but chances are it's not..how sad..it really...really is.

i just cant imagen him so worried about drug's and sleep so bad..that it would result in not ever wakeing up again..not telling youre kid's you love them or youre mother or family members or friends one last time. it kinda makes you wonder if the "doc" knocked him out with the diprivan and then just jacked him up with all these drug's and killed him..for what reason i dont know "because he can" ?? or maybe had a hit out on him for money, when i watch the video he posted just the look of him and the speach send's chill's down my back, it's just unbelieveable and then to wait that long for help things just dont add up..heart breaking it really is.

Even someone without Medical training can see that mixing all those medications is dangerous. I am not saying that the doctor did it on purpose but isn't he supposed to be pretty good in his field? So how can someone get to that level in his medical career and not know that what he was doing was wrong! Come on now. He had to know that what he was doing was risky. I don't care how much a patient begs you are the one with the medical training. The "story" doesn't make sense. You administer a powerful drug then go to the bathroom. That's insane!! Imagine you are in the operating room under anesthesia and the doctors decide to go on a potty break, does that make sense? Is that acceptable? The drug was not even supposed to be used outside a hospital setting!!

Any qualified doctor should know well enough not to leave a patient under that many drugs alone. In the "short" time that Dr. Murray was gone Michael Jackson Died. Maybe when he gets out of prison he will think twice about leaving a patient by themself. Such a tragic day when Michael died and all due to the stupidity of a so-called "qualified" doctor. Michael will be loved forever!!!

It is such a shame that michael died. I believe the doctor was the last to give this medicine to mj. Dibrillation units should have been place near by. possibly it could have made a difference. just because someone makes demands for medication. A doctor with better judgement should have used his head instead of giving more medication. It obviously attack his heart. Sorry but this is the way I feel. MJ rest in peace you were a king here and you will be rockin in heaven little angel.
