Lethal levels of propofol found in Michael Jackson's body, affidavit says [Updated]

MurrayL.A. County coroner's officials found lethal levels of the powerful anesthetic propofol after examining Michael Jackson's body, according to a search warrant affidavit unsealed today in Houston.

According to the search warrant, Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, told detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department that he had been treating Jackson for insomnia for about six weeks. He had been giving Jackson 50 milligrams of propofol every night using an intravenous line, according to the court records.

But Murray told detectives that he feared Jackson was forming an addiction and began trying to wean the pop star off the drugs. He lowered the dosage to 25 milligrams and mixed it with two other sedatives, lorazepam and midazolam. On June 23, two days before Jackson's death, he administered those two medications and withheld the propofol.

On the morning Jackson died, Murray tried to induce sleep without using propofol, according to the affidavit. He said he gave Jackson valium at 1:30 a.m. When that didn't work, he said, he injected lorazepam intravenously at 2 a.m. At 3 a.m., when Jackson was still awake, Murray administered midazolam.

Over the next few hours, Murray said he gave Jackson various drugs. Then at 10:40 a.m., Murray administered 25 milligrams of propofol after Jackson repeatedly demanded the drug, according to the court records.

[Updated at 12:45 p.m.: Although Murray acknowledged to police that he administered propofol, authorities said they could find no evidence that he had purchased, ordered or obtained the medication under his medical license or Drug Enforcement Administration tracking number. However, police detectives saw about eight bottles of propofol in the house along with other vials and pills that had been prescribed to Jackson by Dr. Murray, Dr. Arnold Klein and Dr. Allan Metzger.

Other drugs that were confiscated in the search included valium, tamsulosin, lorazepam, temazepam, clonazepam, trazodone and tizanidine. They also found propofol in Murray’s medical bag. Murray told detectives that he was not the first doctor to administer the powerful anesthetic to Jackson.

At least two unidentified doctors gave Jackson propofol in Germany. Between March and April 2009, Murray said he called Las Vegas doctor David Adams at Jackson’s request to arrange for Adams to administer propofol. Murray said he was present at a cosmetologist’s office, where Adams used propofol to sedate Jackson. Since he began treating Jackson, Murray said he repeatedly asked the pop star what other physicians were treating Jackson and what drugs they were prescribing. But Jackson declined to provide the information, Murray told authorities.

Murray said he noticed injection marks on Jackson’s hands and feet. When he asked Jackson about them, the pop star told him he had been given a “cocktail” to help him. In addition to Murray, authorities subpoenaed medical records from Dr. Arnold Klein, Dr. Allan Metzger and Dr. David Adams, the affidavit states. They also asked for medical records from Dr. David Slavitt, who conducted the independent medical examination of Jackson for Anschuntz Entertainment Group, Dr. Randy Rosen and nurse practitioner Cherilyn Lee. They also subpoenaed records from Dr. Mark Tadrissi, who stored medical records with Adams. ]

Murray has already acknowledged obtaining and administering propofol to Jackson the morning that the pop star died. In an interview with police, Murray told them that he had left Jackson alone under the influence of the medication to make telephone calls to his Houston office and family members.

When he returned, he discovered Jackson was not breathing. He performed CPR, and one of Jackson’s staff members called 911. The 50-year-old pop star was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center, where he was later declared dead. Much of the investigation has focused on propofol — a drug typically administered by anesthesiologists during surgery — and whether Murray’s decision to give it to Jackson as a sleep aid outside a hospital setting reaches a level of negligence required for an involuntary manslaughter charge.

This is not at all a surprising development. If you self medicate with that many drugs and then propofol on top its your own fault but a Doctor should have known better, particularly how these drugs react with each other. Sad loss other world, devestating loss for his children. This didn't have to happen.

All Drug addicts want more, he wanted more, he wanted to be high as a kite.. To feel good feel away from all the stresses of the paparazzi, everything.. It happens he wasnt superman

2 words for Michael Jacksom.....STUPID IDIOT!

For the person who wrote, "Hang Murray Higher And The People Behind Him HIGHEST !!!" Michael is already dead girl, he brought it on himself!

I still think back to the search warrants served on Michael Jackson's home during the 2 allegations, where medications were not only reportedly found -- but photographed. Here we are these years later looking at the same names of doctors, with a new one (Murray) who prescribed these medications. I still wonder how blind Santa Barbara and Los Angeles made themselves to be to turn their heads in regards to the drugs. It is more than logical that they could have worked his drug use into the charges ... SOMEHOW. Reckless endangerment of a child (his own)... people have their children taken away with less proof than they photographed... available on the net! For heavens sakes. I wonder how many of those people involved are feeling guilty today.

As for Murray, I hope people push LAPD and LA DA to seek Murder 2, not involuntary manslaughter. Not only did Murray, on his own account, say that he knew that Michael was having "some type" of needle-related drug problem and continued to prescribe and administer drugs to him, but also witnessed other doctors giving him the drugs.

Sadly however, I smell a deal coming. Murray is turning on other doctors -- and I bet you that he will not see Murder 2-- but maaybeee Involuntary MS.

Pathetic that money ruled his world and not the oath he undertook when he became a doctor. I hope Murray sleeps well at night knowing he has 7 children in this world that still have a father-- and there are 3 who don't have one ... because of his unethical behavior.

Let's face it, Michael was a quack himself!

good night

INSOMNIA IS A COMMON PROBLEM WHEN YOU ARE BEING WEANED OFF AN ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCE. Adding more addictive substances to combat this insomnia is like adding gasoline to a fire. Murray says he was worried Michael was becoming addicted yet gave in when he demanded/begged – ADDICTS DO THAT – DOCTORS ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT ADDICTS FROM THEMSELVES BECAUSE THE ADDICT IS TRYING TO TAKE CONTROL OF A SITUATION THAT THEY CANNOT CONTROL. I know when I was on morphine after an operation, begging for more didn’t work for me because my medical team was looking after my best interests. Administering substances Murray didn’t understand, didn’t know the consequences of combining, or how much he could safely administer when combined and then walking out 10 minutes later . Murray was highly reckless and negligent.

This is so sad. MJ would have been still alive today if he was not injected with those lethal drugs. Those greedy and immoral doctors need to be put in jail and to pay for the crime they committed. They do not deserve to be medical doctors

The really sad thing is this "Dr." will receive a nice slap on the wrist. He will end up making millions off of interviews and a book deal. The country is so ass backwards at administering punishment to people that deserve it. He took MJ's life and should have made other people aware he was in dire straights. The man was a drug addict and needed help, not another high price dope dealer.

What kind of doctor is Murray? A doctor doesn't know how to perform a proper CPR procedure, a doctor doesn't know how the 911 number function, a doctor spends hours to clean up the track before calling help. Maybe he didn't mean to kill MJ, but his action extremely suspicious.
Even it was MJ's fault in demanding the drug, as a physician, Murray had to stop feeding and administer MJ drug that would harm. Murray was a doctor, he should know cocktail of drugs are harmful. Murray's code of conduct is so questionable, his license should be suspended and he should send to the big house.

I think that doctor is not reliable.
It is not still the true. I don't know, what is the true, but I can feel that is not this.

Ahoy, I can not imagine having the top of my head burned off as a major star world wide and have to live with wigs and go on stage night after night. The pain must of been endless, not to mention the horror of having no hair and no nose and and and, your wife and best friend leaves you also. Endless pain can ruin your whole life and your mind. Damn this is just so wrong, Damn the Doctors, greedy, Doctors are the worst to admit they do not have a clue how to fix long term chronic pain. Michael Jackson is now safe with Jehovah. I believe that the whole Jackson Family Rocks with savy and with time and love all the childrens pain will turn to memories, stonemkr, Morro Bay, California

wow.

How is Dr. Murray any different than the plastic surgeon that continued to perform disfiguring plastic surgery on Michael Jackson just because he demanded it and had the money to pay for it? This medication had no place in Michael Jackson's bedroom. Obviously, Dr. Murray does not practice ethical medicine and Michael Jackson is the one who payed the ultimate price.

A FAN posted 02.03pm 8/24. Brilliantly stated assessment. Kudos.

MJ is dead. That is the important thing.

Vito

People will do amazingly stupid things for money - including doctors. All of these people who were giving him drugs loved the money more than life. For shame.

stupid doctor, this is so sad

Oh come on people, yes - Dr. Murray is an IDIOT and a GD fool, but who in the world do you think ordered up the cocktail of drugs he was taking? MJ WAS NO INNOCENT VICTIM!!!! Yes, he was an addict of epic proportions, unable to control himself, but still - it was HE who made the decisions to continue on down the path of total destruction!!!!! There was no good end to all the drugs he was taking!!! BYE BYE "UNCLE" ARNIE TOO!!! I have a feeling he'll do just fine in prison though.

Okay. First and foremost, I don't mean to be cruel, but apparently Dr. Murray posseses no common sense or INTELLELENCE!!! 1) Giving an anestetic outside of a hospital?? 2) Stating MJ would not provide him with information as to whom had been treating him in the past and what for??!! HELLO!!!! If the police found 8 vials of propofol, as well as OTHER VIALS, ALONG WITH medication perscribed from a Dr. Klein and Dr. Metzger? Wouldn't that have been some sort of clue to Murray? Not to mention the enormous amount of other sedatives MJ was taken. AND..... where did Murray get the propofol if the police can't determine through purchases or track by his DEA # ?? Where did it come from? OMG Also, if Murray saw needle marks and said MJ had a "cocktail" (which I don't doubt because the pain from his operations) WHY DIDN'T MURRAY TAKE THAT MEDICATION OUT OF MJ'S POSSESSION IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS!!!!! Honestly, I am stunned by this man's ignorance to say the least!!!!!!!!!!! He is most definatley guilty of negligence at the very least. It's almost apparent he didn't truly care if MJ died or not. That would be MURDER. Regardless, have fun in prison DOC.

When I had insomnia I used marijuana to trained my body to sleep at night. Now when I hit my bed at 11PM I'm out until 6am to 8am. A glass or two of wine also helps.

If the doctors so called got a degree to get to be called a "doctor" why didnt they know that the drug propofol was to only be used in the e.r? if they hadnt introdce that to his body as a daliy proscribed drug, then Michael Jackson could still be living. On top of that, other drugs were used! It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that drugs add up. Now all thanks to yall(whoever gave him the drug)fans have committed suicide because of the lost of their hero. I forgive them for that but a healer, the only healer is gone and there is no returning. Now i may only be 14 but I am highly educated. That man wanted only to help humainty by hiding stories behind the entertainment of his music for us to figure out. They might have not known better to give it to him but they should have at least test it out in a lab. If the personal doctor should face the charges brought up then everybody who gave him the drug AT ALL should also. That's my opinion.!!

My inspiration is gone and he isnt returning.

As someone who has suffered from chronic insomnia for 5 years, it is really easy to understand why MJ had such a hard time finding the right combination to fall asleep. For anyone who has ever experience chronic insomnia for more than 3 nights you never get your sleeping habits back. Mine was triggered by misreading my steroids prescription after eye surgery. I was up literally for 10 days. I can tell you, your mind doesn't turn off no matter how badly you want to sleep. And when your medicines won't work, you will try any and everything possible to get to sleep.

MJ talked about he couldn't shut off the music in his head. Exactly what happens to insomiacs. All the meds except for the propofol are all meds to aid in the patient fall asleep due to anxiety or stress. None of the meds that are listed, I would call addict medication. However none of the treat the underlining problem of shutting down racing mind. None of the doctors were psychiatrists which actually was something that would have provided the right combination for him to fall asleep.

Dr.M is definitely responsible for his death. He lied to the police about giving MJ propofol and he lied about the time he gave it to him. MJ was dead at 8am not at 11am. Dr.M lied to the EMTs and the docs at UCLA. He lied and left the scene. I don't care how long he spoke to the police. He lied about giving him a drug he was not trained or authorized to prescribe or administer.
