Man fatally shot by Santa Ana police officer

August 4, 2009 | 10:09 pm

A man was fatally shot tonight by a Santa Ana police officer who responded to a report of a suspicious person, authorities said.

The shooting took place about 7:10 p.m. behind a motel in the 2700 block of North Grand Avenue, said Cmdr. Ruben Ibarra of the Santa Ana Police Department.

The man has not been identified.

It was unclear why the officer, who responded alone, fired  his weapon, Ibarra said.

He said investigators were still at the scene trying to piece together what happened.
