Firefighters creating fire breaks at Briggs Terrace in La Crescenta

August 31, 2009 | 12:32 pm

Firefighters have been trying to create a fire break along Maurice Avenue, in the upper limits of La Crescenta's Briggs Terrace neighborhood, to keep the fire from creeping down from the hillsides above.

They report that the fire has moved slowly, but has persisted, particularly on the Goss Canyon side.

The fire on the Goss Canyon side of Briggs Terrace is worrisome because on the other side of the canyon’s western ridge are Eagle Canyon and Shields Canyon, where there are many homes terraced up the hillside.

Residents in the latter area have been confused by a series of calls made in the early morning hours, first declaring an evacuation of all neighborhoods north of Orange Avenue, between Pennsylvania Avenue and Briggs Avenue, then canceling that call. Some did not receive the cancellation. Others got the cancellation but not the evacuation call.
