5 rescued from yacht sinking off Malibu

August 22, 2009 |  5:30 pm

Five people who were fishing this morning off Point Dume in Malibu were rescued from their sinking yacht, authorities said.

The 42-foot vessel started taking on water and someone aboard put out a distress call to authorities about 10:50 a.m., said Inspector Frederic Stowers of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Two people were in the water and three were still on the yacht when help arrived. No one was injured and the rescue was done by 11:30 a.m., Stowers said.

Three boats were used to tow the yacht to Marina del Rey and Stowers said investigators are now trying to determine why the craft began taking on water.
