Sheriff's deputy shot in Palmdale

July 12, 2009 | 11:07 pm

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy is hospitalized in stable condition with a shoulder wound after being shot tonight in Palmdale, officials said.

The deputy returned fire but did not not hit the suspect, who was arrested about 40 minutes after the 8:03 p.m. shooting, officials said. The sheriff's department did not release the name of the deputy, who is in his 20s, or the suspect.

“It appears that the deputy is going to be okay, that it’s not life threatening,” said department spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Although information was sketchy, officials said the gunman was walking in the 1000 block of Avenue Q4 when the deputy stopped him for questioning. The suspect then opened fire, jumped in his car and drove off, officials said.

After a pursuit, he was apprehended while climbing out of the back window of a home in the 2000 block of Cape Cod Lane.

The deputy is being treated at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
