Girl, 11, injured in Junior Lifeguards accident

July 14, 2009 |  5:07 pm

An 11-year-old girl was injured this afternoon during a Junior Lifeguards training exercise in Huntington Beach, authorities said.

About 3 p.m., a group of junior lifeguards was conducting a routine training exercise known as a “speed drop,” in which they drop into the water off a moving rescue boat, said Laurie Payne, spokeswoman for the city of Huntington Beach.

The ocean was choppy, Payne said, and when the boat circled around to pick up the swimmers, its propellers hit the girl.

The unidentified girl was given first aid at the scene and taken to UC Irvine Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately known, Payne said.
