Man killed in Compton barber shop shooting identified

July 4, 2009 |  1:52 pm

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies searched the Compton area today for two suspects in an attempted robbery at a barber shop in which a third man was shot to death Friday afternoon by the armed barbers, authorities said.

Jamel Lee Kelly, 25, was shot and killed when he and two others entered the shop in the 2700 block of North Wilmington Avenue, said Lt. Brian Elias of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Two others involved in the botched robbery attempt fled the scene after two armed barbers fired on them, apparently wounding a second assailant as a trail of blood was found outside the shop, said Sheriff’s Deputy Guillermina Saldana.

Detectives are investigating the incident but hadn’t yet reported to dispatchers whether either of the fugitive suspects had been apprehended, she said.
