Body discovered in Aliso Viejo could be that of missing elderly woman

July 29, 2009 | 11:06 pm

Authorities are determining whether the body of an elderly woman found late Wednesday night near an Aliso Viejo park is Margot Walters, the 76-year-old who went missing two weeks ago.

A bicyclist riding on a path along a creek near Woodfield Park reported a foul odor to authorities about 7:30 p.m., Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said. Deputies searching the area did not find anything and a cadaver dog was brought in. The dog located the body in some bushes between the path and the creek shortly after 9 p.m., Amormino said.

Amormino would not comment on the possibility that the body was Walters, whose home is about a mile from the park.

“I’m not sure what condition the body is in,” he said. “I don’t know if we can confirm any identification tonight.”

Walters’ disappearance was reported July 17 when her husband woke up in the middle of the night to find her gone. Her purse, cellphone and identification were left behind.
