Steve Lopez: Villaraigosa's pullout announcement was 'pure Antonio'

Of course L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said no to a run for governor.

What else could he say?

You can't do a mediocre job, get lukewarm support in the polls, and announce one week before the start of your second term that you're graduating to bigger challenges. That'd be like getting a 2.0 GPA in high school and announcing you'd like to be a brain surgeon.

Although Villaraigosa had already made it clear he was probably going to bow out of the race, there was our guy on CNN with Wolf Blitzer this afternoon, making it official on national television. Pure Antonio. He actually thinks the rest of the country cares.

"I can't leave this city in the middle of a crisis," he said. "It's as simple as that."

Because of our crisis?

Here's a bulletin: He's not running because at the moment, he knows he wouldn't win, given all the self-inflicted damage he's done by way of empty public promises and dubious private choices.

Villar is SUCH a loser. Steve, you called this spade a shovel. Villar is so far behind in the polls because of his dismal performance. Someone talked some sense into this guy, it sure as hell was not a decision he made on his own. The voices inside of Villar's head are saying, "The people all love me, I'm the man. I know I can win..... can't I?" Come on Villar, shout from the halls of Los Angeles City Hall, "WE CLEAN YOUR TOILETS!" It's all over, dude. You'll be lucky to survive the next 4 years.

The point you missed Mr. Lopez, is that Antonio is free to continue being driven in his tax payer provided Hummer to eat at the Pacific Dining Car, rather than being flown to Honolulu to enjoy his favoritte pineapple burger, or Paris to enjoy his crepes at our expense - as his buddy Fabian Nunez had no problem doing on my earned dollar.

Oh, and speaking of Nunez, Villaraigosa can now devote more time to being a character witness for Nunez' son charged with murder. Antonio was kind enough to write a letter in support of releasing Nunez' son from jail after the victim was stabbed to death allegedly because Nunez' son doesn't like smart people.

That clown wouldn't win anyway. His pro-illegal immigrant/criminal agenda is not flying with California's average voter. People are feeling the effects of the criminal invaders and are tired of it.

This is all very sad for the great city of Los Angeles. This Mayor has embarrassed our city and ruined with his support of all the illegals. He's forgotten about the proud Mexican American Latinos born and raised in this city. We weren't the dumb ones though that voted for him. We voted for Mayor Hahn knowing Antonio's baggage. I hope people remember it was Mayor Hahn who appointed chief Bratton not Antonio as he loves to claim. Thanks Steve for having the guts to print the truth what many of us have always known.

OH Steve! You are so RIGHT! When are people going to see ole Veeyaragosa for what he is...a charlatan...a windbag...a demagogue...who just has to have more power. Typical.
