Small earthquake on Mexican side of border

June 13, 2009 |  6:14 pm

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from a small earthquake that struck an area south of the California-Mexico border. The quake had a magnitude of 3.6 and hit at 3:37 p.m. about 45 miles south of Calexico, near the Mexican enclave of Guadalupe Victoria.

The shaker struck at a depth of 6.3 miles, according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Friday night, an earthquake of a similar but smaller magnitude occurred south of today's temblor.

On the north side of the border, a still weaker earthquake was recorded just after noon today, 26 miles north of El Centro. This one had a magnitude of 2.8. Earthquakes of these magnitudes rarely cause serious damage.
