Naval Academy midshipman is in brig in pot smuggling case

June 17, 2009 |  5:07 pm

A 24-year-old midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy is in the brig in San Diego after allegedly being caught attempting to smuggle 150 pounds of marijuana into the U.S. from Mexico, officials said Wednesday.

He was stopped at the border June 10, and is being held in the brig at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. His name is being withheld until formal charges are filed.

The Naval Academy sends hundreds of midshipmen to San Diego each summer between their second and third years.

The case is being handled by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as part of the military justice system.
