First swine flu death reported in San Diego County

June 16, 2009 |  6:07 pm

San Diego County has had its first swine-flu death, county health officials said Tuesday.

The victim was a 20-year-old woman. The county had some of the first cases of the swine flu before it began to spread throughout the country.

The county has had 275 confirmed swine flu cases, with 20 requiring hospitalization, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. The unnamed 20-year-old woman became sick on the weekend and died within 24 hours, Wooten said.

The state has had 7 swine-flu deaths, the nation has 44, Wooten said. San Diego County swine flu victims range in age from four months to 81 years.
