Gang member indicted in fatal San Diego shooting
A San Diego grand jury has indicted a 35-year-old gang member in connection with a 2003 shooting that killed two women and wounded a 7-year-old boy on their way home from church.
James Carter, a member of the infamous Skyline gang, has been indicted on two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Carter is in jail on an unrelated robbery charge.
Carol Waites, 45, and Sharen Burton, 32, were killed by crossfire between gang members when they stopped at Dr. J.'s Liquor Store on their way home from New Year's Eve services at the True Faith Missionary Baptist Church.
The two had stopped at the store to buy a fireplace log. Waites' nephew was hit six times as he shielded her 2-year-old granddaughter.
"These innocent victims were caught in a gang revenge shooting that shook the community and left law enforcement with very few leads," said San Diego County Dist. Atty. Bonnie Dumanis at a news conference announcing the indictment.
Witnesses said eight to 12 gang members were attacking up to eight members of a rival gang. Investigators for the police department and the district attorney's office were able to develop information that put Carter at the scene as a shooter, officials said.
