Campground closes after mountain lion attacks dog

May 5, 2009 |  6:40 pm

A campground in Cleveland National Forest has been closed as authorities search for a mountain lion that mauled a dog earlier today as it tried to protect its owners.

A couple were taking their black Labrador for a walk near the Blue Jay campground when the mountain lion appeared ahead of them on a trail about 1 p.m., according to Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.

The attack occurred near the Falcon Crest gate off the Ortega Highway, Amormino said. The dog underwent surgery at Clinton Keith Veterinary Hospital and is expected to survive, Amormino said.
