Man fatally shot at entrance to Beverly Center [Updated]
[Updated at 6:30 p.m. The man shot at the Beverly Center mall this afternoon was identified as Atlanta-based Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, according to his publicist, Sue Vannasing. She said Dolla was shot in the head around 3:10 p.m. while he and another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, waited in the area after shopping at the popular Westside mall. A friend who was with the rapper at Beverly Center also confirmed his identity to The Times.
About two hours later, Los Angeles police detained a “person of interest” as he attempted to board a plane out of Los Angeles International Airport. The man allegedly drove his silver Mercedes SUV from Beverly Center to the airport. Vannasing said Dolla had gotten into an altercation with other passengers on a flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles, but it's unclear if that was related to the violence.]
[Updated at 5:15 p.m.: Police have arrested one "person of interest" in connection with the shooting but were looking for a second suspect.]
[Updated at 5:40 p.m.: The arrested suspect, who fled from the mall in a silver Mercedes, was detained at Los Angeles International Airport while trying to board a flight. Police said the shooting took place in the valet waiting area of the mall].
The shooting occurred just after 3 p.m. at the La Cienega Boulevard entrance to the popular Westside shopping center. All entrances and exits to the popular Westside shopping mall were sealed off as police swarmed the scene.
LAPD officials said that officers were sent to the mall on a report of a group fight, possibly involving a knife. LAPD Sgt. Ronnie Crump said two suspects ran in the direction of Beverly Hills.
At a Chipotle restaurant in the mall, several people were eating when the shots rang out.
“The customers were yelling 'close the store, close the store, because somebody is shooting,' ” said Elsa Hernandez, general manager of the restaurant.
An employee who was behind the restaurant, near the mall’s valet parking service, saw the tail end of the dispute, Hernandez said. “He saw a lady ... shooting a handgun,” Hernandez said.
The center is normally quite peaceful, said Hernandez, who’s worked at the restaurant for six years. “This is the first time this has happened here,” she said.

Great, here we go again. What is it with rap and shootings? Funny, I don't recall Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead never getting into any gun battles. Or Adam Ant gunning down anyone from Flock of Seagulls. And I can't say I remember Poison and Ozzy blowing each other away, though I'm sure there was tension...
Posted by: Paul | May 18, 2009 at 07:25 PM
Good point, Paul. What is it with these guys? Temptations never shot anybody, ditto Earth Wind And Fire and all of those guys. Marvin Gaye wasn't so fortunate. Maybe his father was gravitating towards rap... Anyway, it's ridiculous that there is so much of this in this particular genre of music.

I thought it was illegal to carry a gun in L.A.?? I thought it was illegal to have a gun in the mall?? Didn't the shooter know this was illegal? Did they post signs outside? This could have been prevented if the shooter would have known it was illegal to carry the gun in the first place. Ooops, he did know. Goes to show: Only law abiding citizens follow laws. The gun laws in L.A. are useless. Obviously.

This is LA people. Ish like this can happen anywhere anytime. Rappers, politicans, movie stars, joe citizen, students are not immune to this nonsense. Last year, a lady got murdered in the Century City parking lot by her husband and Century City is supposed to be this rich, upper class area. Well, no community is immune to this stupidity. Welcome to LA where anything and everything goes.

The world is the way it is now because people are heartless, bitter and have hatred in their spirits. I truly hope your father, mother, brother, sister, daughter, son, wife or husband gets killed....Lets see if you react the same way. What I was trying to say was grow up. If you don't care- then to each his own but that doesn't give you any right to disrespect a deceased person; doesn't matter if they're a celeb or an average joe like you. The man is still dead. If someone killed the one you loved/cared about and no one gave a crap- came to the funeral just to spit to on their grave. It wouldn't bother you any? Shows your compassion and maturity. Hopefully you'll go through something just as tragic so you can shut up. If you don't care, why read- why comment? What? Just to show your a** because you can do that, free country right? This is why other countries despise America now...bastards abuse their free will on a daily. Ignorance is bliss and I hope every bastard chokes on theirs.

I don't understand how people can make fun of these acts of violence, if you don't live in these crime ridden areas you have no right to comment. Stop talking outta of your ass.No one wants to fix this problem. It is a virus. The politicians that live in the nice caged up neighborhoods prefer that we have this ongoing genocide. He was killed because he was young and about to blow up into fame. Just ignorant haters raised in an area where guns are used to resolve unnecessary disputes.

Oh wow, I can't believe the cynicism that is riduculously afloat amongst some of these comments. This IS a human life we are talking about here. Someone's son, brother, father, etc. who is no longer alive due to stupidity. I agree fully that it is stupidity. But to say "the sooner they all kill each other, the better life will be for the rest of us" is sheer heartlessness, and perhaps indicates a MAJOR need for some serious soul-searching. It is sad when ANYone loses their life, especially to stupidity-infused actions. I pray for his family that they receive the peace and comfort they need from God, but moreso I pray for those of you who just wrote this off as "another thug rapper dead..." Rest in Peace "Dolla"

First off this wasn't a rap related murder, it was over a stupid arguement that happened at the airport hours earlier. Its sad that a lot of you people can't see that this is someones son, brother, family member period and it doesn't hit you that this could happen to anyone. It doesn't only happen to rappers, so please do not be ignorant & blame it on the music. It happened to John Lennon, so was his music to blame for that? No it wasn't, some people are just sick & its a very unfortunate loss for his family, friends & fans.

Thats the rap culture. Im sure they all think that is real cool. dolla thought he was cool getting into a confrontation at the airport. The people that shot him thought they were cool because they popped a cap. Yay. The only thing thats cool is no innocent bystanders got hurt by these retards. Minus one.

What a shame, another talented young rapper dead! The anger factor of young thuggish types is alarming. I agree with you guys-other musicians do not do this, but rappers certainly seem to shoot or stab first, talk later if at all. Biggie, Tupac, Dolla, all shot in public; I'm amazed more bystanders aren't mowed down by accident, just wait for it to happen.
Posted by: HIpotumas | May 19, 2009 at 12:08 AM
Why cant America put an end to this violence that exists in all the major cities in our country from Washington D.C.,to Chicago to L.A. and everything inbetween!. this narcisistic sub culture destroys everything in it's path, when they get in front of a judge they cry about being the victim of poverty etc.
the truth is they do not want to work or go to school. they want to lay around smoke pcp and sell crack on the streets!
they refuse to take advantage of the opportunity that exists.
they have their own culture that has been around for many years the young man has many children by several different
girls he doesent pay child support but having all these babies gives him some status in the ghetto that he helps to create maintain and perpetuate. How do you help someone who has nothing but contempt for civilized society? look at our teen pregnancy problem the highest in all of the western democracys! I say its time to adopt a zero tolerance approach
let the law have a free hand society must be protected at all cost!

First off all of the racist / stereotypical comments should not even be posted due to there is enough ignorance in the world already. This young man was murdered, who just just happened to be a rap artist. The people who pulled the trigger, are casualties as well, for thinking the only way to solve a problem is trough violence. I can almost bet that this incident had absolutely nothing to do with Hip Hop and people should stop assuming every violent act done has to do with HIP HOP!
People, please stop with the ignorance and hate for a culture and think twice before to choose to take the life of one of your own or anyone else for that matter. Hip Hop has been around since 1973 and I can't think of a REAL murder that was attributed to it. Violence amongst young people involved with RAP has nothing to do with the personal beefs they may have had prior to becoming a recording artist. Those truly wanting to "Keep It Real" then love ya brothers and sisters and make money with them, not kill them.
So many people out there would love to see Hip Hop end.
Though I did not know the man or his music, My sympathy and prayers go out to his family.
PEACE

I remember visiting from NY in '81 when this place opened and looking out from my friend's terrace on West Knoll Dr. ..how beautiful it was. Ah, this society has changed--look around everywhere, it'll just keep getting worse I'm afraid. Good luck to all law-abiding, hard working citizens.
Posted by: RAYS | May 19, 2009 at 05:19 AM
I am reading all the comments with some disbelief. My son and a friend are trying to get started in the rap business. I am a mother and grandmother. Don't listen to rap. can't understand what they're saying half of the time. I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I understood their lyrics. There is a background. Maybe there is more violence in the rap music industry. Why? This young man had a family I'm sure a mother who loved and will miss him. A sister, brother, grandparents, maybe even a wife or girlfriend or child of his own. Does his music preference make him more of a target? Why? Here is another waste of life and possibly young talent. I have Jim Croce, Harry Chaphin, Selena, and of course the great John Lennon to mourn. I didn't know this young man, but I can't help but feel an extreme sadness over what has happened. Stop the hate ... Please.

Ok first off if you're making fun of this situation how is that ok? You didn't even know the guy or hear his music so how can you judge? It disgusts me that a lot of you are dismissing this as just another rapper shot. The guy probably has family, maybe even children. I'm sure you wouldn't be dismissing it if it was somebody that you knew.
Posted by: Hmmm | May 19, 2009 at 06:54 AM
I am so sick of this kind of behavior! There are some "good" rappers, but come on people, what other musical genre has so much violence surrounding it? Country? I dont think so. Hip Hop and Rap, as they are celebrated today, has ruined Black music and is destroying the Black community! Enough! Put the thugs in jail and make them listen to classical music. Calm them down and teach them how to manage their stress without popping their fellow man.

That is just flat out sad. So many good people are getting shot now a days you really have to think twice about just going out to chipotle. I mean this last year football had Plaxico Burress shoot himself. Honestly I just think people should sit in their homes playing on sites like this and ours all day! Dolla RIP i sure hope your in a better place!
Posted by: Sportsroids | May 19, 2009 at 07:14 AM
well, after doing some personal investigation, i think this is very sad.
i checked out his myspace (opposing to what some may think that his music was all about violence), he was a very talented artist who DID NOT rap about guns and killing, rather women, money and partying.
sad that he was trying to do better for himself/family, and you got someone who thinks its cool to use a gun to kill another human.
RIP.
it's the guys that shot him that give a bad name to ALL responsible gun owners. To all you gun control advocates, chances are this was an illegal gun since 90% of all kinds of guns are illegal in CA. so don't use this to say "ban all guns".
illegal guns are not legal guns.

It could happen to anybody... true, but you can choose to live your life in a manner in which it will become less likely to happen to you. If you have attended a party in the last year where a person or people were carrying guns (illegally) you are more likely to have this happen to you. If you, or people you regularly 'hang with', carry weapons (illegally), then it is even more likely to happen to you. If you either of these are true for you, let Dolla become a symbol for you, and choose to change your life so you and your loved ones don't ever have to experience something like this personally. If you don't know where to start, just kneel down and pray every day when you wake up, God is real and he will help you.

Live like a gangsta - Die like a gangsta!!!!! Die Young!
We need an gangsta tax kinda like cigarettes to pay for the cost of all this stuff. If you buy rap music, get tattoos, ear rings, wear your pants below your waist then you pay a steep tax. It worked for cigarettes, right?
Seems like we need a law to keep people from shooting one another - especially black on black crime and latino on black crime. Wait we have a law, but blacks and latinos don't follow it. Scratch that plan!

Sorry to all of you in Cal that these derelict Georgians (the deceased and the shooter) infiltrated your space. It IS the rap culture that leads to this. The music praises barbaric, idiotic and illegal behavior. I am sorry for the young man's family, but he was a man who made choices and he was leading a life that promotes the behavior that brought him down. Hard to muster much sympathy for someone who displays this irresponsible, egomaniacal and greedy selfish behavior. His contribution is that we can have him serve as an example to our kids of how not to act.

This is the fault of George Bush. He allowed this to happen and did nothing to stop it. I say we blame everyone else othere than the criminal that did the crime. The true criminal has many rights and he will get out of jail sooner or later so lets say the tax payers money, not have a trial, call teh criminal a victim because he is still alive and once again blame someoine who had nothing to do with this! It HAS to be Bush's fault.....

Even though I didnt know him personal I went to almost every concert and he signed my shirt i was waiting on the next time i could see him in person to get a picture wit him but, since somebody was "HATING" on him and killed him I see it will never happen. I am glad the lifestyle of these upstanding young musicians lends itself to meaningful contributions to society, and the strengthening of the funerary industry. Such a meaningful thing to die for...that good old "thug life"...gosh, wassup dog? bang bang bang sho' nuff showed him what's what...And damn deez white people for disrespecting the time honored custom of stupid black men who sing and carry guns and shoot each other while holding up their pants... but not too high because that's another time honored black cultural highlight: walking around with your a$$ hanging out. Why can't Beretta make lots more 9s for cheaper so more of these idiots can get their hands on them and shoot at each other sideways?

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving fellow.

A lady may have done the shooting? About time.
The way these losers degrade women ought to have 'em all reaching for a .38.

If you'd like to understand some more about this type of violence, find yourself a copy of The Wire and watch from the beginning of Season 1. A terrific show and you might begin to understand.

There's more to this crime.Waiting for the follow up on why he was shot in the head.

Can someone tell me why people keep claiming there are "racist" comments here? Factual is more like it. Rap has taken a retarded turn in the late 90's to thinking it's cool to be thugs and has yet to escape that. The guy who pointed out that rap is the only music where i'ts musicians continually seem to be shot is not racist, it's a fact. The music sucks anyways, I always want to bitch slap kids driving down the street pumping the bass super loud looking tough. However unlike them I I try to live in a civilized society so I don't

Rest in peace brother. I don't get why, why in the world he had to be shot. No offense, but take a rapper who has already had his days. Preferably none, that speaks for itself. He was an upcoming, promising artist who I would have love to have heared from some more. I'll always think of this sad day from now on, when I will listen to his tracks.
RIP Dolla.

Another dead "rapper" - what a darn shame; saves the taxpayers a lotta bucks!
Back to hell where you came from, creep; too bad the Muslims aren't targeting you "rappers" with your filthy so-called "music"

There is a family grieving because of this death, and that is as it should be. Most of the people posting their 'thoughts' here probably didn't know the young man, but take the opportunity to throw insults while hiding behind the screen. What's heartbreaking is to read the comments with the negativity, the racist over-and-undertones, and to see how devalued education has become in America. You shouldn't plan on getting by in life without knowing how to spell and how to compose a sentence. There is n-o-t-h-i-n-g wrong with studying and learning how to write before you launch your thoughts into cyberspace. Please, just think about it. Knowledge is the best weapon. Prayers for the victims family.

The evil gun just hopped into (his/her) hand and the trigger pulled itself. Ban those evil guns. Just look at how the poor Mexican drug lord industry has been hurt by evil guns.

I would like everyone to keep his family up in prayer, I lost a brother in November of 2008. It doesn't matter what a person 's skin color is or how they lived his or her life, we are all human beings created by God .

"couldn't have happened to a more deserving person"?
Are you kidding me? The only person that I think DESERVES to be shot is Perez Hilton. Other than that, NO ONE deserves to be shot. You disgust me.

FIRST OFF LET ME START BY POINTING OUT THAT IN MOST OF THESE ARTICLES YOU PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT HE WAS KILLED FOR LIVING A "THUG LIFE" BUT PLEASE SHOW ME WHERE IN THIS ARTICLE POINTS OUT THAT DOLLA WAS LIVING A "THUG LIFE." SECOND I DON'T GIVE A DAMN IF HE LIVED A THUG LIFE OR NOT THAT DOES NOT GIVE ANYONE THE RIGHT TO TAKE ANYBODIES LIFE FOR ANY REASON!!!! HE DID WAS BARELY LIVING. HE WAS ONLY 21 YEARS OLD. THIRD YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS WAS BLACK ON BLACK VIOLENCE BEING BLACK HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT...IT WAS IGNORANCE!! AND JUST SO YOU KNOW WHITE PEOPLE KILL TOO. FOURTH THE PERSON THAT POSTED A COMMENT SAYING THAT BLACKS AND LATINOS DON'T FOLLOW THE LAWS, IM GOING TO NEED YOU TO GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT, NOT ALL BLACKS AND LATINOS BRAKE LAWS. P.S. THERE ARE WHITE PEOPLE WHO BRAKE LAWS TOO! LASTLY, DON'T BLAME RAP...BLAME AMERICA!!!!!

its weird because both stack bundles and dolla were rising stars and are all of a sudden stopped in their tracks by gun shots. . .
they never had the chance to appeal world wide which is sad because i bet they would both have had great careers.
i never knew about dolla until today but i still have respect for what hes been doing and i guess ill google him up.
RIP STACK BUNDLES / DOLLA

Everyone that had anything negative to say about this man is "DEAD ASS WRONG". Excuse me if my grammar is incorrect. But you people can not just choose to stereotype this man because he lived a Rapper Characteristic Type of life. He could have been the sweetest person in the world we don't this only his family knows this. You can not say that it was because of his "THUGGISH" ways that led to his death because you don't really know what led to his death, and what ways he carried leading to his death. Just because he rapped like he did and had tattoos and was blinged out if you will does not mean he lived that way. That was just something he liked, I don't know one person that go out and get tattoos and get blinged out because they don't want to do it. People are so quick to stereotype the Hip-Hop/Rap music industry that the black culture came up with that is a gift by itself. And this man made this gift that he had HIS LIFE. It is only God's decision who comes and goes, and it just so happen to be Roderick's time, whether it was taken or not. Nobody can judge this man cause nobody lived this man's life. You can only give condolences to his family and leave it be.
R.I.P Dolla
