May 27, 2009 | 11:22 pm

A Long Beach police detective and three suspects were wounded today in a gun battle, authorities said.

The incident began when Long Beach detectives observed a shooting in Compton about 5 p.m. and began chasing the shooters, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The detectives, who were investigating an unrelated case, chased the suspects onto the 710 Freeway and onto the Willow Street off-ramp in Long Beach, where detectives and suspects traded gunfire.

The detective was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The suspects were also taken to a hospital, but their conditions were unknown.
