Koretz widens his lead in L.A.'s 5th District council race

May 22, 2009 |  6:10 pm

Former state Assemblyman Paul Koretz has widened his lead in the race to replace Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss, pulling ahead of neighborhood council member David T. Vahedi by 551 votes.

The tally, released Friday by county election officials, gave Koretz 50.8% of the vote, compared to 49.2% for Vahedi. County officials will continue counting the remaining ballots from the Los Angeles election next week, with the next update expected Tuesday.

Koretz and Vahedi were running in the council's 5th District, which stretches from the Westside to Encino.

It is wonderful to see that Paul Koretz will most likely be the next councilman for the fifth district. CD5 is the worst district when it comes to density. The residents have serious needs such as traffic congestion and blight. The last councilman, Jack Weiss, did not help out my neighborhood and when he did, he only did so because we wrote letters and alerted the media about our bad street and corroded water coming out of our pipes. If Mr. Koretz staff is responsive and respectful to the residents and helps us solve the problems we have, Mr. Koretz will do well with me. One thing I would object to however is marijuana dispensaries. I know Mr. Koretz believes in medical marijuana, a banned substance. I don't think it is healthy for our children to see these smoke shops in our neighborhoods. I hope Mr. Koretz keeps that in mind.
