Griffith Observatory honored for having one of world's greatest ceilings
The Griffith Observatory is already one of L.A.'s great landmarks. But now, it's getting recognition -- for its ornate ceiling. Virtualtourist.com named the observatory's Central Rotunda as one of "the World's Top 10 Greatest Ceilings." "Designed by Hollywood art director turned muralist Hugo Ballin, the subtle, circular painting depicts the signs of the zodiac and other celestial beings," the travel site said. "An interesting side note: Ballin was a sketch artist on the film 'The Wizard of Oz,' which might explain the ceiling’s whimsical look." The website also honored Macy's Department Store in Chicago and Grand Central Station in New York. "We appreciate astronomically this recognition of Griffith Observatory’s singular Ballin murals," observatory Director Edwin C. Krupp told City News Service. "They operate at the conjunction of astronomy and arts, and there is nothing like them anywhere else in the solar system." Ballin also produced murals in the Los Angeles Times Globe Lobby. -- Shelby Grad Photo: The entry rotunda at the Griffith Observatory features murals from the 1930s by Hugo Ballin. They don't make buildings like they used to.

Thank you for mentioning Virtual Tourist for naming the World's Top Ten Greatest Ceilings. As to the Griffith Observatory Hugo Ballin Central Rotunda Mural, it was I who sent in my photo and reason for selecting Griffith Observatory as one of the top ceilings. Sorry, you could not have used my photo with your article, but thanks anyway for helping to get Virtual Tourist out there. Regards, VTer "travelgourmet"
