The owner of the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hopes to win city approval to demolish the mid-century modern hotel. The Los Angeles Conservancy and high-profile preservationists including Diane Keaton are poised to battle the plan.

In the meantime, the hotel will be the setting for the 2009 Los Angeles Architectural Awards luncheon on May 28. Eric Owen Moss, director of the Southern California Institute of Architecture and a designer of innovative, edgy office buildings and residences, will be the keynote speaker.
