Magnitude 4.4 quake shakes the Westlake Village area [Updated]

May 1, 2009 |  6:30 pm

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck the Westlake Village area at 6:11 p.m., shaking a large swath of the region. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The quake — centered in a hillside area seven miles from both Malibu and Westlake Village — could be felt in the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County.

One Westlake Village resident said the quake caused a strong jolt but that nothing fell off shelves.

[Updated at 7 p.m.: The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that an elderly woman was injured when she fled her apartment during the quake and fell down.]

Quake was felt in West L.A. also.

Felt it in Topanga!

Didn't feel a thing in the Miracle Mile area.

Felt it in Whittier.

I live in the Agoura area on the LA-Vta County line. It was a sharp jolt followed by about 5-10 seconds of shaking. Kids playing on the street did not notice it at all. "Move along here folks, nothing to see."

well, I just arrived in Los Angeles on 4/16 and I felt my first quake "trimmer!!" Can't wait to tell the folks out East, but I have to wait til tomorrow because of the time zone difference. Welcome to LA!!

felt it in Toluca Lake

I was speaking of earthquakes while having dinner. Said that "Agoura is a pretty safe earthquake zone" and then boom, we had one! Freaky.

@stephen swearingen:
You better tell the folks back east about a "tremor", not a "trimmer". Because that's what it's called in English, which, contrary to popular believe elsewhere, is still the official language in California.

Felt a soft rolling in Huntington Beach

felt a quick jolt in santa monica

Felt Quake in Simi Valley

wow...here in Marina Del Rey we really felt it...a few jolts and then a lot of swaying...alluvial soil! Will be buying earthquake supplies tomorrow.

Felt it in west Hollywood. Mild.

Definitely felt it in Hawthorne. Thought it must have been a large truck playing very loud music. The floor vibrated!!!

I'm visiting Huntington Beach from Phoenix and I didn't feel a thing! I was watching Paul Magers on CBS 2 News when he reported it.

Felt it in Encino!!

I knew it wasn't just the usual craziness in Venice.

I'm in Westlake Village and the strangest thing about this quake was that you could hear it before you could feel it. At first we thought there was rolling thunder in the distance and then wham.. the shaking began

Felt nothing in El Sereno.

felt it in huntington beach!

My daughter in West Lake said her lap top jumped up off of her lap. Said it sounded like a big shotgun blast and woke up baby Evan.

Felt a rolling sensation for a few seconds in Winnetka

Notrhing in San Pedro

Felt here in Camarillo. Would rather have a few small ones on occasion, than a long silence followed by the BIG ONE.

Didn't feel a thing here in Missouri ;)

I miss earthquakes. I'd take those over tornadoes any day!

Didn't feel a thing in Carpinteria (16 miles south of Ventura, 12 miles North of Santa Barbara). I was shocked to hear of it!

Mild, single jolt in Valencia.

Felt it in Culver City

Felt it for a few seconds in San Pedro, 5th floor apartment.

We didn't feel a thing here in Dallas, Texas!!!

Felt tiny tremors in West Los Angeles near UCLA, but kept right on working...sigh.

Felt it in Altadena.

there was a quick jolt around 10:34.

There was another one just now that we definitely felt here in Thousand Oaks. Didn't feel the one in the evening though.

Heard it in Westchester/LAX, but didn't feel it. How's that possible?

Just felt a brief jolt and shake in Long Beach. Definitely nothing major here.

woke me up from a light sleep in pasadena for sure, thought i was imagining things but i guess i was not after all.

Felt it in Long Beach.

very mild rolling in my 2nd floor NOHO walkup

I felt one here today on the Big Island but totally unrelated to the Los Angeles area shaker. Of course we get them here a few times per day at least so most are not felt. But then I live on the world's most active volcano! The biggest one I ever experienced was in Pacoima CA in 1971! Threw me right outta bed! Personally I prefer hurricanes to either tornadoes or earthquakes. I like a lot of advance notice. Even lava flows here allow for plenty of time to prepare..or move out of the way!! :)

Not a thing on my part of Calabasas Hills all bed rock too

Live in Valley Glen. Felt the apt floor begin to shake, followed by a short "grumble" from the ground and then the apt bldg just swayed for a bit. Barely had time to stand up and it was over.

Shook my school in Tarzana.

Yep,

Not the big one!

Bill in Santa Monica

some felt it burbank... i didn't..

I remember last year a woman I was dating who lived in Westlake Village was visiting me here in downtown LAwhen a similar sized earthquake struck. She way overreacted when I merely stated "earthquake" and I continued to watch the movie we were watching. It took her nearly an hour to calm down. I imagine she's still looking for a Red Cross shelter in Westlake Village - HA There was a reason I called her 'hoodless'.

---bump bump in Sierra Madre

I felt it while my brother and mother just 20 feet away did not feel it.....strange.

Felt it in Thousand Oaks. It was really long. I was able to actually comprehend what was happening and run to the doorway! Crazy

Los Feliz

Felt it in Van Nuys....

Felt nothing here in New Mexico
:)

I was speaking on the phone to a colleague in West Hills when she said she felt an earthquake, did I feel it? I said no, and then Yes, it's here! Near Culver City.

Nothing in Eagle Rock.

Felt it in Rancho Palos Verdes. We usually don't feel quakes up here on the hill.

Its time we start stocking up on water and canned goods with all that has been going the past few months

Strong "bang" in Woodland Hills.

I must say I miss the quakes, the smaller ones at least. The seismic map sure has blossomed in the past year, seems like the same pattern leading up to Northridge. Be there in May, save a temblor for me!!

(quiet out here in Denver)

felt a little vibration in sf valley, felt kind of good ;)

I felt it and I live in the Miracle Mile area of L.A.

I live in Westlake Village and was home. It actually sounded like a dump truck driving by with a load of gravel in it and hitting a speed bump. I wasn't sure what happened as this was only my 2nd earthquake experience since moving here from the East Coast. I wasn't scared until my cats jumped 6 feet in the air and tore off to God knows where in the house! Then felt another one, less intense, later in the evening. Hopefully that's it for awhile!

I was driving on the 101 at Reyes Adobe in Westlake and it made my car jump. I thought it was just a strong gust of wind.

@ LAmike
"popular belief" not "Believe". One of those other pesky Enlish language attributes we pay attention to here in CA... along with people in their glass houses
