Magnitude 4.4 quake shakes the Westlake Village area [Updated]
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck the Westlake Village area at 6:11 p.m., shaking a large swath of the region. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
The quake — centered in a hillside area seven miles from both Malibu and Westlake Village — could be felt in the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County.
One Westlake Village resident said the quake caused a strong jolt but that nothing fell off shelves.
[Updated at 7 p.m.: The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that an elderly woman was injured when she fled her apartment during the quake and fell down.]

@stephen swearingen:
You better tell the folks back east about a "tremor", not a "trimmer". Because that's what it's called in English, which, contrary to popular believe elsewhere, is still the official language in California.

I felt one here today on the Big Island but totally unrelated to the Los Angeles area shaker. Of course we get them here a few times per day at least so most are not felt. But then I live on the world's most active volcano! The biggest one I ever experienced was in Pacoima CA in 1971! Threw me right outta bed! Personally I prefer hurricanes to either tornadoes or earthquakes. I like a lot of advance notice. Even lava flows here allow for plenty of time to prepare..or move out of the way!! :)

I remember last year a woman I was dating who lived in Westlake Village was visiting me here in downtown LAwhen a similar sized earthquake struck. She way overreacted when I merely stated "earthquake" and I continued to watch the movie we were watching. It took her nearly an hour to calm down. I imagine she's still looking for a Red Cross shelter in Westlake Village - HA There was a reason I called her 'hoodless'.

I must say I miss the quakes, the smaller ones at least. The seismic map sure has blossomed in the past year, seems like the same pattern leading up to Northridge. Be there in May, save a temblor for me!!

I live in Westlake Village and was home. It actually sounded like a dump truck driving by with a load of gravel in it and hitting a speed bump. I wasn't sure what happened as this was only my 2nd earthquake experience since moving here from the East Coast. I wasn't scared until my cats jumped 6 feet in the air and tore off to God knows where in the house! Then felt another one, less intense, later in the evening. Hopefully that's it for awhile!

I was driving on the 101 at Reyes Adobe in Westlake and it made my car jump. I thought it was just a strong gust of wind.

"popular belief" not "Believe". One of those other pesky Enlish language attributes we pay attention to here in CA... along with people in their glass houses
