Updated at 6 p.m.: The earthquake has been downgraded to a magnitude 4.0.

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck this afternoon about two miles north of Hawthorne, close to the epicenter of Sunday's 4.7 temblor.

It's unclear whether the quake was an aftershock of the Sunday quake, which caused minor damage in the South Bay.

The quake erupted about 7.5 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Updated at 4:20 p.m.:There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the quake rattled nerves of some South Bay residents who felt it strongest. The Los Angeles Fire Department went on alert, but spokesman Brian Humphrey said via Twitter that the department found no evidence of injuries or fires.

The epicenters of both quakes are located east of Los Angeles International Airport and south of Hollywood Park. The epicenter of this afternoon’s earthquake is about 3,500 feet southeast of Sunday’s. The epicenter was at West 112th Street and South Lemoli Avenue  near West Imperial Highway and Crenshaw Boulevard.

Officials at Caltech said today's quake was an aftershock of Sunday's quake.

Felt it in Irvine. Lasted only about 2 secs, was very mild shaking.

Wow that was strong. We are in Long Beach and felt it.

i felt it! ktown / mid-wilshire

I was sitting in my office in Irvine. I heard the windows shift (as they usually do when they heat up in the morning or cool in the evening), and then i just felt a gentle wiggle.

I was grading a student's paper at the time, so I didn't even react until after I was grading, when I looked up and said, "I think I felt an earthquake."

I felt it in the SGV. A quick jolt, pretty loud.

Yes, on the 5th floor of our office building in Tarzana, CA.

i felt it here at work in carson. for me, it only felt like one jolt for 1-2 seconds and that was it.

Yes. Felt it in Westchester/Playa del Rey area.

Are the latest earthquakes we've been experiencing a precursor to the big one the Geological people have been talking about?

felt it here in Palos Verdes, lasted about 5 seconds, i was gently surfing for a while.

Definetly felt it!!! I work in Paramount, and we felt it here! This is starting to be scary!

Yes, we felt it. We are in AT&T Building in LA on 12th & Olive.

The whole building in Carson shook just like last Sunday.
It seemed like lasted longer than the one before.

Felt it pretty good; I'm in a high rise in downtown, so you know we were swaying for quite awhile here. Pretty unnerving at first but when the shaking didn't escalate any further I calmed down.

i felt very slightly it in silver lake!

I work at UCLA and I felt it. This one did not feel as bad as the one on Sunday.

i felt it. it was a smooth one. downtown la

Felt it in Los Feliz. A weak jolt and then some long-ish lasting waves.

Felt the earthquate at around 3:50 in Santa Monica, on the 3rd street promenade.

it was a loooooonnnnnngggg one !

I felt it on the 12th floor of a building right off the 405 at Howard Hughes, not far from the epicenter. It gave us a good shake for a few seconds. Also, we've felt a few aftershocks.

Felt it in Seal Beach near the 405 freeway...

mother nature is at it again. ;)

Didn't really feel much but it did sound like a bomb went off.
Currently at work in El Segundo.

Felt the tremble in Westchester. Not as long or as strong as Sunday evening, but I never get used to them. Is this a sign of things to come.

Felt it very close in Westchester. Shook for about 3 seconds.

Felt it here. Two big jolts real quick. Dear mr. or ms fault, go back to sleep please.

felt it in carson, quick jolt, 1-2 seconds max

Yes, I was on 6th floor and there was a thud sound generated by the building at 1299 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica. This bldg has rollers and can sustain I think 7.0 Quake.

WHOA!!!!! Live near Rancho Park.. THAT WAS INTENSE.. LIKE THE SUBWAY WAS OVER MY APT......... SIDE TO SIDE

Felt it! We are near downtown LA. Scary!

I am in Long Beach, 3rd floor of an office building and we felt it..slow rolling motion.

Working my computer in Sherman Oaks, I felt a significant tremble.

We felt it in downtown L.A.

Felt it in El Segundo

I live an work in North Redondo. I was on the top floor of my home and it shook badly.

In an office tower in El Segundo, about 2 miles from the epicenter. Shook strong for a good 5-10 seconds. Building is on rollers, so that may have made the quake seem longer. As a non-native, scared the bejeezus outta me. I'd rather deal with tornadoes than quakes!

Felt it in Santa Ana. Longer but not as jolty as on Sunday.

90019 and it felt like Sunday just a tad lighter and shorter. Was it not as deep?

I felt too. i'm in Hollywood and was very mild, but I felt for about 5 seconds.

Yes, I felt it here in So. Torrance. It was only a few seconds, but definitely a rumbling sound, like a dump truck was driving by. Lamps shook a little but not so bad because the dog didn't even budge from his nap.

It was a quick shake, for a very short period of time, people came out from their shops in downtown L.A. San Pedro wholesale mart.

Nothing in the downtown LA high rise I am in...

felt it here in seal beach. .it was quick. .my boss standing like 5 feet away said he didnt feel it haha

Felt it in 90012; mild, brief shaking.

We've ben doing earthquake drills at my office, but when this one hit people seemed to just freeze and/or panic. Guess we need more drills.

Yep... Felt it in La Habra.

Shook the house pretty good- downtown l.a.

Felt it in Seal Beach, long gentle rolling wave.

I am in Anaheim and I felt it. Felt more like a small earthquake than an aftershock.

that's scary..feel it @ucla

felt it in 90048, at Cedars! not for very long but felt the swaying and hear a jolt. kind of unnerving on the heels of Sunday's quake.

Felt it in Century City. Was typing, and then all of a sudden - I thought I had one too many at lunch..LOL! Naw - it was about 1/3 of the one yesterday - at least to me.

I felt it. It was like a 9.2 and lasted at least a half an hour. It was the longest cab ride out to Universal Studios. The earthquake felt like the car was hitting potholes. All the dust coming from the wheels was really scary and made the car move at 40 mph. I just couldn't get over it.

Thank God it stopped right when we got to the Studio!

Yes, I felt it in El Segundo. Quick roller, lasted a few seconds.

Felt in Westwood.

yes! 4th floor of building in El Segundo.

Barely felt it at UC Irvine. It did give me a nice headache.

Felt by many in Rosemead 91770.

i work on the border of manhattan beach and el segundo, on rosecrans, just west of the 405. our office building shook violently for four to five seconds. not fun. definitely the least pleasant earthquake i've experienced since moving to california at the end of 2002. yikes.

Felt it in West Hollywood. A quick and jarring jolt then very little shaking and...that was it!

Yes, felt it in Downtown, LA high rise, 19th floor. about 5 seconds. Building swayed a bit.

I'm on Santa Monica near the 405, and felt nothing at all. I'm on the 10th floor of a high rise and the building is on rollers... that may be why we didn't feel it here.

i felt it was quick culver city scary

At Work and we felt here in Norwalk, CA. 90650 It wasn't hard compared with the one on Sunday....

What's happening??????

Yup, here in Inglewood was a wham dinger, my 4 year old is trying to cope with the new feeling that comes with dealing with the unknown....

Daddy, do we have to get under the table again.... Yes, baby every time you feel that, get under the table. PEOPLE PLEASE PREPARE CORRECTLY FOR THINGS LIKE THIS.. KNOW WHAT TO DO. SAVE FOOD AND WATER TO SUSTAIN YOU FOR 3 DAYS, KEEP SHOES NEAR YOU... KEEP SPARE CLOTHES AND SHOES IN YOUR CAR, AND MAKE DESIGNATED AREAS FOR YOURSELF AND FAMILY....

Felt it here - in Old Town Torrance. Felt a little wobbly and then as if the house bounced.

im in library at LAHC. everyone stopped for about 5 seconds, looked around and got right back to studying. No big deal, finals are coming sooner than the Big One.

Felt a little rolling in our downtown high-rise

Started with a small jolt and then came a stronger jolt, pretty good size and then it was finished - I'm in East Los Angeles

I just hope there will be no big one coming. can the experts give us some forecast ?

Felt it in Montebello. Only about 5 seconds and pretty gentle.

Felt it. Barley noticble on the 5th floor in a Glendale building, thought it was the wind against the windows. I thought iIwas crazy, until i heard the confirmation on the radio.

Felt it in Echo Park. Heard a weird crunching noise and the glasses rattling...felt a little shaky. Really quick but it freaked my dog out.

Felt it over at Keck School of Medicine at USC -- a quick boom followed by a little rocking (on the second floor of a nine story building).

Felt it in La Palma, Orange County.
We had to evacuate the whole office building

Yes in Venice. About 4-5 seconds. Scary but not too violent. Not liking the frequency of these earthquakes of late.

Felt some rumblings for 3 sec. with some sound/Glendale
scary

felt it in rancho palos verdes....near Bristol Farms... rocked a bit then stopped...not as long in duration as sunday night's quake.

I felt it in Echo Park -- about 3 seconds of side-to-side shaking, briefer and lighter than on Sunday. I think there were 2 distinct shakes, the first one possibly stronger than the second.

Heard it first here at City of Industry and the tremor came afterwards. We are on a second level and heard the windows rattle. Everyone asked, was that an earthquake?

At the convention center and felt it! It felt like I was being thrown back into my chair and the wall! Just felt a jolt, no rolling, but it was strong!

I felt the shake in El Monte, east of LA. I was in 2nd floor of the 5-floor building and near the window. I could feel it but my roommate about 3 feet away from me didn't feel anything.

Felt it in Irvine but just slightly.... on the 12th Floor on Main St... building went up and down strangely enough... perspective, perspective...

In Redondo Beach, in the Redondo Union High School Library. Felt it very good. The entire building swayed, heard some cracking noises

Felt it all the way in Alaska

El Segundo. 2nd story. felt a long sway. and then screaming.

A few bumps in Yahoo! center like somone moving furniture upstairs.

Miracle Mile: Felt it on the second floor of our house. Shook for 3 or 4 seconds and then made me feel drunk for another 15 seconds or so. People on the first floor didn't feel a thing.

Felt it on the 12th floor here in El Segundo...

Did not feel anything here in Van Nuys, Victory/Woodman area. Felt the one Sunday night though.

Barely felt it for a few seconds here in Phoenix.....

I didn't feel it. I don't live in California, but my best friend does - near Crenshaw in View Park, and lately he's been calling me everytime one occurs (I'm in Wash. DC). The one on Sunday rattled his nerves pretty bad, The one a few mins ago, according to him "felt like Sunday's "bomb blast" but not as long.

i'm in alhambra. thought it was the neighbors upstairs who i swear must jump out of their beds and off their couches all the time, but then my husband called to see if i was okay. *knocks on wood* one of the joys of living in so cal, right? agree with a previous poster - have supplies ready and easily accessible in your home, your car, AND your workplace!

Didn't feel a thing in SD

felt it in west hollywood...i just thought it was my neighbor being loud upstairs. it was a very quick shake.
