Man fatally stabs girlfriend, wounds self in East L.A., police say

April 3, 2009 |  7:51 am

A 27-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death before slitting his throat in front of deputies was expected to survive, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said today.

Deputies went to a home in the 900 block of N. Eastman Avenue in the City Terrace area about 3 p.m. Thursday after neighbors heard a young woman screaming, Sgt. Diane Hecht said in a statement. When deputies arrived, they saw the man holding a knife to his throat at the front door.

He was ordered to drop the knife but instead slit his throat, Hecht said. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was expected to survive, she said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not released, pending notification of her family. Authorities said the couple, who previously lived together, had been involved in an argument, and deputies had been called to the house by the woman earlier that afternoon to take a domestic violence report.

Boy, the domestic violence call sure did a lot of good. Pretty much worthless to file one. Guess the cops didn't take him in eariler after the initial call. Or they let him go without to much hesitation. Good job on the police dept behalf.
