Redmond O'Neal charged with drug possession [UPDATED]

Updated at 12:35 p.m.: O'Neal's arraignment was postponed until April 24, when he is due to appear before Superior Court Judge Graciela Freixes.

Prosecutors today charged Redmond O'Neal, the son of actors Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett, with felony drug possession in connection with his arrest this weekend in Santa Clarita at Pitchess Detention Center.

O'Neal faces a single count of possession of an illegal substance in a jail facility. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office alleges that O'Neal was found in possession of heroin during a routine security check Sunday morning in the parking lot of Pitchess Detention South Facility.

Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said O’Neal, 24, had apparently gone to the facility to visit an inmate. O'Neal told sheriff’s deputies before the search began that he had drugs on him.

Prosecutors recommended that bail for O'Neal be set at $50,000. He will be arraigned this morning in Santa Clarita.

The charges mark the latest in a series of troubles for O'Neal, who has struggled with addiction. O'Neal and his father, Ryan, was found in possession of methamphetamine last September.

Really? He went to visit someone in jail and had heroin on him? He's an idiot. I feel sorry for his sick mother in the hospital. Well, spoiling kids apparently just doesn't work, does it? The little darling that always gets his own way, just grows up to be a complete jerk. And the way parents raise kids these days, we're only going to have more and more jerks who feel entitled to always feel good. What a disaster for us all.

Obviously, he wants help. Hope he gets it.
