Multiple shooting at Temecula campsite [UPDATED]

April 7, 2009 | 10:25 pm

Updated at 10:50: A Riverside Sheriff's Department spokesman told reporters from the scene that one victim was fatally shot when a gunman opened fire at a campground near Temecula. The spokesman said authorities don't believe the gunman is still at large, suggesting he could be among the three others taken to local hospitals. He said the victims were all Korean and that detectives were struggling with a language barrier.

Authorities were searching a campground near Temecula tonight after reports that a gunman shot four people during a religious retreat.

Details about the shooting were sketchy. Riverside County Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers were scouring a large expanse of open space off California 79.

KTLA News reported that the shooting occurred during some type of church retreat. Fox 11 said early reports indicated that four people had been shot, and two were in critical condition. KCAL-TV said authorities were searching for a 70-year-old man who is believed to be the gunman.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. at the Woodchuck campgrounds.
