Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart killed in accident
Latest story: Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart killed in car crash
Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was among the three people killed in a crash in Fullerton when a driver ran a red light, an associate of the rookie player said this morning. The crash occurred hours after the 22-year-old appeared in Wednesday night's Angels game.
He died in the accident that occurred
shortly after midnight at the
intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue and Lemon Street in Fullerton, said Lt.
Craig Brower of the Fullerton Police Department. Several witnesses told police
that the driver of a red minivan ran a red light at the intersection, hitting a
silver Mitsubishi carrying four people. Two people were pronounced dead at
the scene by paramedics, authorities said. Two others were taken to a nearby
hospital, where a third person was later pronounced dead, Brower said.
A third vehicle also was involved, but there were no reports of any injuries.
Authorities said the intersection would be closed at least until noon as the investigation continued.

Such a tragedy. A young man, with such potential has been taken away so soon. This comes on the heels of the beautiful, young USC student who was also killed by a hit-and-run driver. These criminals who flee the scene of the crime obviously have something to hide. Given that these tragic events occurred in southern CA, the odds are that these people fleeing the scene are in this country illegally. The L.A. Business Journal (4/6/09) published an article citing that in the 8 years from April 2000 to July 2008, L.A.'s population increase can be attributed to foreign immigrants and the natural growth that occurs when there are more births than deaths. During that same period, American-born residents, a net of more than 1 million moved out of L.A. County. Also a very real, on-going tragedy.

This comment is in response to Nancy above: I agree this is a tragedy and I'm sadden by it but to assume with out knowing any facts that the person who fled the scene is in this country illegally is absolutely ignorant on your part.
Posted by: JG | April 09, 2009 at 09:25 AM
Nancy -
"Foreign immigrants" does not mean "illegal." Thousands of individuals immigrate into the U.S. (and Los Angeles) every year. America allows this. They are called permanent or legal residents.
Don't turn this into a blame game by assuming the driver of the van was undocumented. The driver who killed the USC student was not.
People flee because they don't want to be caught after they have KILLED someone - not because of their status.
If you're so worried about overpopulation, advocate for birth control.

Nancy at 9:03am, I suppose it should be no surprise that hard-right anti-immigration types should try to politicize a tragedy, but please, show some decency.
What these drivers have to hide is that they murdered people.
Posted by: AL | April 09, 2009 at 09:28 AM
RE: Nancy, nice spot for some crap statistics. Your speculation that people flee the accident because they are illegal is laughable. Instead of preaching xenophobic ideas, a simple RIP and some prayers to all those involved would have sufficed.

Hey, Nancy - instead of speculating who did the hit and why they ran, why not wait until we actually know?
Your comment reeks of fear and racism, and really has no place in this thread.
Posted by: Eric | April 09, 2009 at 09:36 AM
If the driver of the minivan, which ran the red light, fled on foot, that should be some indicator as to how responsible they are! Three lives are snuffed out, and this careless jerk off will get nada! I say execute em!!

Nancy @ 9:03 says -- " Given that these tragic events occurred in southern CA, the odds are that these people fleeing the scene are in this country illegally."
CNN reports that the (alleged) driver, who has been arrested, is one Andrew Thomas Gallo.
Which is a long way of saying that Nancy is a heartless buffoon.
Back on message -- somebody has got to get to young athletes entering the Big Time and tell them some common sense things. For example: if the driver has been drinking, call a cab... every time. You shouldn't have to do this, but give kids piles of money -- and even the minimum contract looks like a fortune to someone so young -- and they (convinced of their immortality, still) can't control themselves or think long range. Or a good number of them, anyway.
MLB may very well have such a program -- a remedial course may be required to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Just sad, really.

Posted by: Seanboy | April 09, 2009 at 09:40 AM
Nancy-- the person who created this horrible accident fled because he was drunk. Why make the assumption he was an illegal immigrant? I don't know where you live, but my neighborhood is saturated with out of state license plates from aspiring actors who have moved here from the east coast raising the rent because they are dying to live in Los Angeles and will pay anything to live here. Take that into account rather than assuming people are moving out because of all the illegal immigrants living here. You know what happens when you assume...

My heart goes out to Nick's and the other victims' family, friends and team... what a tragedy, and so early in his promising life. I hope that the driver who caused the accident goes to prison for long, long time to think about the suffering they've caused.
Posted by: Sympatheic A's Fan | April 09, 2009 at 09:41 AM
This is going to be a tremendous loss to the Adenheart family as well as the Angels organization. Nick had an expremely bright future in front of him and was considered to be the top pitching prospect in the organization. To lose someone at this age is heart breaking, but the more important issue is how this happened. I am confident the driver was drunk at the time, otherwise he would not have left the scene of the accident. The comments about violent behavior@ stadium events around this country and hit and run accidents can only be tired to abuse of alcohol. MLB lost another one of its young interns 2 years ago when his taxi was hit by a drunk driver. When are we going to start to address this waste of innocent lives?
Posted by: Jackie | April 09, 2009 at 09:41 AM
Wow. I've seen people use a situation to spew hatred before, but Nancy, you take the cake. You use this poor kid's death to spout your TOTALLY unverified predictions about where the driver of the minivan came from. Let me give you "the odds" on your posting. It tells me you're a complete jerk. Take your hatred to a more "appropriate" forum.
Posted by: WTRegan | April 09, 2009 at 09:43 AM

Where is the name and photo of the minivan driver? The Times is so Politically Correct, that I am forced to conclude the driver is a "person of color" most likely an illegal resident of the US. There is no other reason this information is not published. Ever see a photo of Claudia Cabrera the woman who killed the student at USC or the Hispanic truck driver who killed the father and daughter in La Canada? No, because they are Latinos and the TImes apparently has an internal policy of not "stigmatizing" those ethnic groups. Disgusting. Call a spade a spade and liet the cards fall where they may.

Nancy,
This is a tragic event and already you want to blame it on immigrants without any information confirmed. The L.A. Business Journal has no stats on hit and run drivers and the percentage of them being illegal aliens? Race has no factor in such a tragic event. It is human decency that determines how you react whether you are here illlegally, naturalized or American born.
Thoughts and prayers are with Nick's family, friends, and the Angels

My prayers to the Adenhart family-thank you for sharing him with us for this brief moment. As for the hit & run suspect-there is and never will be any excuse for killing this young man and his friends! It's time to increase all penalties for hurting and killing people and then leaving them to die! If that's the only good thing that comes out of this...it will at least help.

Posted by: Otis | April 09, 2009 at 09:48 AM
Nancy, racist comments are always inappropriate and non sensical, but you have stooped to a new low spewing hate over a tragic event. I am sure you can't apply logic if you have attitudes like that, but there is no evidence that the minivan driver is here illegally. And if you're so worred about white flight, then please move to iowa.
Posted by: G | April 09, 2009 at 09:49 AM
Tragic indeed. But could have been prevented if the elected leaders in this state stood up against illegal aliens. Illegals and their offspring continue commiting crimes in CA when they should not have been here. They should have been stopped at the border or deported. You will read about these crimes more and more because of no one is enforcing our immigration laws. The MSM will not talk about this and contnue writing sob stories about illegal alien hardships. They should be writing abot the negative consequences of the invasion.

BOY JESSISCA, Ya got that one right on. Nobody wants to talk about the white elephant in the room. As a result we US citizens just end up paying thru the nose to the tune of 10 ~ 12 Billion a year for their services, just in California alone. Why don't the politicians get it? A real tragedy both emotionally and economically!
Posted by: Charlie | April 09, 2009 at 09:50 AM
What a ridiculous and bigoted correlation you tried to make, Nancy. This is a terrible tragedy, not a stepping block for you to make anti-immigrant nonsensical comments. Just so you know, other sources like SI and CNN.com have stated that the driver was booked on felony DUI charges, so I would think that's why he ran.
Regardless of your stereotyping, this is an awful and unfortunate event. RIP to all those involved.
Posted by: Alex | April 09, 2009 at 09:51 AM

Posted by: MC | April 09, 2009 at 09:51 AM
Nancy's comment a few posts down is out of place. What does illegal immigration have to do with anything in this case?? Nothing.
We know little or nothing about the driver....(except if you go to CNN's article about Adenhart's death it will tell you that Andrew Thomas Gallo will be prosecuted on charges of manslaughter, felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run).
The only thing we know is that he fled the scene of the crime, many who felt that they killed somebody would probably flee the scene as well.
I'm very sad about this news and my condolences go to Adenhart's family and the Angels organization. Undoubtedly, a big loss to the sports world.

Posted by: Kurt | April 09, 2009 at 09:55 AM
Nancy, your reference of the L.A. Business Journal has nothing to do with this tragic event or your uneducated point of view for that matter. You're basically saying all people who flee the scene of accidents are illegal immigrants. If you were a little more open minded you'd clearly see the thing these people are hiding is probably the fact that they were drunk since these events did occur late at night. Way to use this tragic accident for your silly plug. Shame on you.
Posted by: OJM | April 09, 2009 at 09:56 AM
Our hearts and prayers go out to the family. It's so sad for a young kids with such a bright future to end so suddenly.
And to respond to Nancy's comment, I don't think this is the time or place to discuss illiegal immigrants. Yes, the person was probably running to hide something but don't jump to conclusions. Maybe he was under the influence.
This article is on a young man's life ending so tragically, not about people coming in or leaving LA.

What a tragedy, have they released the hit and run driver's name yet?
Posted by: Louweegie272 | April 09, 2009 at 09:59 AM
Running a red light is usually a selfish act on the part of the driver. What a shame this happened, ballplayer or not. The only thing we can all take away from this is that our actions behind the wheel have serious consequences. Pay attention and observe the laws. Or you too may live with the fact that you killed three people for the rest of YOUR life.
Posted by: kennedy | April 09, 2009 at 09:59 AM
Nancy,
How dare you leverage this tragedy to try and spread your fear of "illegal immigrants"
For your information, this accident was caused by the reckless beahavior of middle-class Italian-American young man. His family has been in the US for several generations.
Posted by: Alex | April 09, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Nancy, it looks like you have some personal issues. This is not a time for your shallow insight. Focus, thoughts and prayers should be with the families affected in this horrible tragedy. This is a great loss to MLB, and the Angel organization. This was a promising young man and he will be profoundly missed.
Posted by: nick | April 09, 2009 at 10:02 AM
This is definitely tragic and my heart aches for everyone involved. However, the comment by "Nancy" where she stated that, "These criminals who flee the scene of the crime obviously have something to hide. Given that these tragic events occurred in southern CA, the odds are that these people fleeing the scene are in this country illegally", is a completely moronic statement. I personally am a white, US-born citizen and in no way could I even remotely draw the parallel between this tragic accident and it being the fault of an illegal immigrant. Your statement is simply absurd, careless and irresponsible.
Posted by: Brian | April 09, 2009 at 10:04 AM
Nancy, at a time like this it is completely inappropriate to turn this into a witch hunt against "foreign immigrants". Everyone's thoughts should be directed towards the Adenhart family, not towards politics. You have no way of knowing the details of the situation, and it is an insult to Nick and his family to bring your personal biases onto this message board at this time.
RIP, Nick. My thoughts are with you and your family right now.
Posted by: dgm | April 09, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Shame on you Nancy for using a tragedy like this to bash immigrants. It turns out the the hit-and-run driver was an American, but even if it had been an undocumented immigrant it's still incredibly racist to assume that hit-and-run driver equals undocumented immigrant. Our hearts go out to the Angels and to this young man's family.

Nick and I grew up in the same town, and he played little league ball for a year with my little brother. Even when he was 9 years old you could tell he was going to be special. He probably would have been one of the first 5 picks in the draft when he was coming out of high school, but he blew his arm out in his senior year of high school and had to have surgery. He fought his way back from the injury and it seemed from his results in the minors and last nights game he was well on the way to stardom. What sad, sad news....

Nancy dont use this tragedy to promote your hatred or your political issues. People flee accidents for many different reasons. Some are felons some are in shock and some are too afraid to admit they just killed someone. Also Alcohol plays a huge role in this.I am willing to bet the number one reason is Alcohol. My condolences to the Adenhart, Angels and other families of those killed. It's a tragedy of awful proportions, especially in a situation where this didn't have to happen.
Second, to Nancy - go and rot. Who the hell do you think you are to use this senseless tragedy to enable a political diatribe about illegal immigration. You have no idea who was involved or what their race/citizenship is, and to cite a bunch of statistics when those of us who were fans of Nick's, not to mention those who were even closer friends and family are hurting over his loss, is crass and beyond classless. Shame on you!

get over the immigrant thing Nancy, and focus on the fact that this part of the country does not enforce traffic laws thoroughly enough. red light cameras and stiff punishments will help.
Posted by: Ze | April 09, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Although not a fan of red light camera's, I think LA and OC should start installing them to help avoid tragedies like these.

I also read yesterday that a fan was killed in a fight at the stadium. Two deaths related to the Angels. This is very tragic.
Nancy, are you mentally ill? You must be because a sane person would know better that to use undocumented immigrants as scapegoats for everything that goes wrong in this country. Or you just have not evolved yet. This is the real problem with our world today. People are just unable to evolve and think intelligently.

A sad story for the family, friends, and teammates of Nick Adenhart. It is also sad that someone is under the presumed notion that illegal immigration was the cause of this senseless tragedy. Instead of quickly placing the blame on an entirely different issue, understand that this was an avoidable tragedy. Drunk driving accidents/fatalities can happen to anyone regardless of immigration status. To make this situation a public forum on your own personal grievance that may have no possible bearing on the loss of Nick Adenhart is a disservice to those in mourning and quite possibly, racist.

Sad, but don't make a deal out of it just because he was a ball player. The other people hurt and killed matter all the same. This guy is just another trivia question now. Life is short. Baseball doesn't really matter. Swings and roundabouts. Moving on to what's next we shall. Then our turn. Fade to black. Nobody really cares but you, maybe a loved one. First off, I want to send my apology to the family of Nick Adenhart, the Angels and the Oakland A's and all the fans. I'm sorry that you all lost a wonderful young man. The fact that he is so young and to have a parent go to their own child's funeral is probably one of the hardest things to do. The Angels and the Oaklands A's, I hope you all stay strong as Nick would want you all to play hard. Nick is watching you all.
I went to the Angel's game and Tuesday night and I don't think Nick pitched that night. I'm shocked that this happened.
Now to the comments that I read about someone named Nancy reguarding her comment about illegal aliens. Since I do not know for sure if the man that was indeed 1. drinking and driving and 2. driving on a suspended license-I do not know if he was an illegal alien.
He could have been-it is true. However, stick with what we know! We know that he was drinking and driving. We know that he was driving on a suspended license. Is not this enough? Does a person need to be an illegal alien to do wrong? If this person was not behind the wheel of a car (since he had a suspended license), this would not have happened.
Nancy, I am a member of ALIPAC as well, (as you may be) and I am not for people coming into our country by illegal means. However, the point of what everyone is trying to say is-it was not his "illegal alien" status (if he was illegal) that killed 3 people in this accient. It was the fact that he was drinking and driving AND he was driving with a suspended license. He could have been a legal alien-still does not take away the fake that he was drinking and driving. Oh, authoriities have him as well.
We love you Nick Adenhart.

Although illegal immigrants are not the same as 'immigrants', correlating this tragedy to illegal immigrants is a bad, cheap shot, especially w/o knowing. However, Nancy, it is true that many DUI's which involve hit-and-run also involve illegal aliens but in this case I think you jumped the gun and came across as racial. It's best to wait and get the facts before placing blame. The driver will pay (legally) for what he's done and hopefully fair justice will take place for the families and the victims.

My prayers goes out to his friends and family :( He was so young and had a big dream...also the other 3 victims, my heart goes out to them.

I'm with Nancy on this one. Let's be honest, many of these hit and run accidents involve impoverished illegals who just went on a bender after getting paid under the table from their day laborer job that they got by loitering around the Home Depot parking lot.
Don't like the fact that illegals "contribute" as much to the decline of our standard of living by the fact that they and the slew of anchor babies they crap out are largely illiterate, and hugely dependent on all areas of social services? Fine.
Dont like the fact that drunk driving is a huge problem with these impoverished illegals and that many lives would have
been saved had these people not been here in the first place?
That's fine, too. But demonizing/name calling someone for pointing out facts that you choose to ignore isn't going to
make those facts any less true.

This is a sad sad day for all baseball fans and those who knew these young kids. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of those who lost a loved one in this tragic crash. The driver of the minivan should be prosecuted at the highest possible levels the law allows.

Gallo is an italian-surname so he was white and drunk and hopefully is sent to jail. Prayers go out to the families of everyone that was lost

I'm a Rangers fan and I cannot imagine the pain that his family must be going through. My stomach started hurting the moment I heard this story. When a young man's bright future is ripped off his hands by a drunk driver, it makes me wish I lived in a different world. This is not a time to manifest sports rivalries or express your political views, this is a time for mourning.
RIP Nick.

I agree with Nancy. This guy's NOT Italian, he's Mexican. And, Nancy's right...he's probably here illiegally, driving not only drunk, but without any type of insurance and with 5 kids (under the age of 6) at home in some state-funded housing project. I"m sickened by the fact that this happens so frequently....happened to me, but I lost a leg instead of my life. My prayers are with all of the families who lost a loved-one in this accident. Hopefully, this guy will be punished by our courts, and ulitmately, by God.

Wow Nancy, your ignorance tickles me...
First of all he has a license so he cant be illegal. He is probably European. Instead of expressing Sorrow you go on a political rant. Take your hate to a more appropriate Place, like the Fox Website

Latinos accounted for 43% of all sentenced federal offenders -- more than triple their share (14%) of the total U.S. adult population. The share of all sentenced offenders who were Latino in 2007 was up from 24% in 1991, according to an analysis of data from the United States Sentencing Commission (USSC)

My prayers goes for the families of those who died in this accident.
About who was driving is not your concern Ms. Nancy, who are you to judge without having the accurate information.
I lost a nephew by a hit and run. My nephew was only 13 years old. We didn't judged we prayed for that person and I know my nephew is resting in peace. It was their time to leave and I will be praying for their parents. Nancy instead of you pointing out at the immigrants look at yourself and ask if you are God. God will be the judge and who ever this person is, I am sure that God will give him his punishment. In the meantime we should just pray for all the ones that were involved in this tragedy.
My sympathy for the family of Nick. I know what you are going through I have been there and I still remember the day my nephew was killed. God will give you the strength.
Nancy if you are clean of sins then you may throw rocks at the immigrants. Don't be racists because we are all created equally by the One above!

I would say SOOOO much crap about you.. but see unlike you .. I know the apporpitate Time and Place to say "what I feel" towards immagration or any race in general. I've taken the time to read all the post from everyone and some i agree and some i dont.
