Turn in a gun, get a $100 gift card

March 28, 2009 | 12:11 pm

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will begin its annual Gifts for Guns program today at Lynwood City Hall.

Sheriff Lee Baca, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and city officials urged gun owners to turn in their weapons today at City Hall, 11330 Bullis Road.

In exchange for anonymously surrendering firearms to the Sheriff's Department, residents will receive a gift card from local retailers -- $100 for a handgun or rifle or $200 for an assault rifle.

The guns will then be taken to a forge where they will be safely destroyed. More than 3,000 firearms have been collected since the program was developed by the department in 2005.
