The Times is launching Westside Watch, the first of several neighborhood pages the paper will be rolling out this year.

Westside Watch is devoted to covering communities of Los Angeles' Westside, including Westwood, Century City, Bel-Air, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades, and the incorporated cities of Santa Monica, Culver City, Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.

The Times is planning expanded coverage of neighborhoods, including map databases that give readers easy access to a myriad of local data including crime statistics, school test  scores and health information.

Westside Watch pulls together the wide range of Times Westside coverage into one place, including hard news, food and restaurant stories, cultural news and calendar listings. News stories and videos are produced by The Times' Metro staff, with links to the best coverage in the Westside's many community newspapers and blogs. Food and cultural coverage is produced by The Times' features staff.

Look for more features coming soon to Westside Watch, including Q&A sessions with the two candidates in the Westside's District 5 council race and essays about Westside life and issues from contributors in the community.

Westside Watch is a work in progress, and we invite readers to share their suggestions and thoughts.

Looks good! I'm looking forward to lots of articles to keep me up to speed on Westside happenings.

How, how wonderful.

Now, instead of covering the news, the LA Times will point me to the underpaid journalists at the weekly newspapers providing what's left of the California section with news leads.

What's next? Having someone in India do even that?
