'Drag Race High' teacher fired in Oceanside

March 11, 2009 |  9:24 am

A part-time auto shop teacher has been fired by the Oceanside schools district amid a controversy over his involvement in the cable television reality show "Drag Race High." The Oceanside Unified School District Board of Education voted Tuesday to fire Steven Jennings, 29, who taught at El Camino High School.

Jennings had joined students in throwing eggs at the auto shop building at rival Ramona High School, and he also was involved in an incident in which cars were driven around his school's football field, district officials said. Before becoming a teacher, he had worked at an auto supply store. Jennings' firing came on the same night the school board voted to send layoff notices to 83 teachers. Several parents pleaded with the board to spare Jennings, to no avail.
