Victims of insurgent attack identified

March 28, 2009 |  5:58 pm

A Navy nurse and a civil engineer were killed while on duty in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Saturday.

Lt. Florence B. Choe, 35, of El Cajon and Lt. Francis L. Toner IV, 26, of Narragansett, R.I., were killed Friday when an insurgent dressed as an Afghan soldier opened fire at Camp Shaheen at Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. A third member of the U.S. military was wounded in the attack but has yet to be identified.

The insurgent killed himself, officials said.

Choe had been assigned to the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.  Toner had been assigned to Naval Facilities Command in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The Navy has had 28 fatalities in Afghanistan since 2002. The Navy has 2,606 personnel in Afghanistan, including 50 at Mazar-e-Sharif.
