R&B singer Chris Brown booked on suspicion of making felony criminal threats
[Updated 9:21 p.m.] R&B singer Chris Brown has been booked tonight on suspicion of making felony criminal threats in connection with an incident involving his girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna, according to Los Angeles Police Department sources familiar with the case.
Brown was booked at the Wilshire Division station and posted $50,000 bail, sources said. He left the station before 9 p.m.
Los Angeles police said earlier they planned to detain Brown for questioning on an alleged domestic violence assault. In an updated statement tonight, police said, additional charges may be filed against Brown when the case is presented to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. Brown listed his residence as Washington, Va.
[Updated 7:25 p.m.] Brown arrived at the Wilshire Division police station before 7:15 p.m., accompanied by his attorney Mark Geragos and Geragos' investigator, Scott Ross. The pair drove into a parking lot behind the police station on Venice Boulevard just east of La Brea Avenue in a black Cadillac Escalade. They entered through a back door where a posted sign read “authorized personnel only.” Police are expected to release a statement later this evening
Both Brown and Rihanna canceled their performances at tonight's Grammy Awards.
The alleged incident was reported about 12:30 a.m. Sunday in Hancock Park.
Brown and Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, were apparently in a car together and got into an argument on North June Street, according to a Los Angeles Police Department statement. Brown stopped the car, the two got out, and the argument escalated, according to police.
A witness called 911, but Brown was gone when officers arrived at the scene. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker, according to police.
Brown and Rihanna had appeared together Saturday night at Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy gala in Beverly Hills.
Shortly before the Grammy show began at 5 p.m. at Staples Center, Grammy officials issued a statement saying, "We have just been informed Rihanna will not be attending tonight’s 51st Grammy Awards. Rihanna will not be performing. We are sorry to see she is unable to join us this evening.”
A publicist for the Barbados-born star, who sold more digital song downloads than any other in 2008 with nearly 10 million tracks, said Sunday night, “Rihanna is well. Thank you for your concern and support.”
Her song “Disturbia,” which she’d been scheduled to perform at the ceremony, was the sixth best-selling digital track of the year. She was replaced by veteran soul singer Al Green, who was accompanied by country singer-guitarist Keith Urban.
Brown’s record label spokesman did not respond to The Times’ request for comment. His whereabouts were unknown as the Grammy show began. Brown finished 2008 as the fourth-best-selling artist in the digital realm, posting 6.8 million tracks sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Yikes! What a terrible story. I hope that there's no cover-up and that everything gets resolved ASAP.

i have a hard time believing that a small guy like Chris Brown punched Rihanna (not that he couldnt do it).
Poor Rihanna what in the world was his problem, what a loser.

Wow I can't believe this. This was something you usually read on April fools day but it turned out this is real

That is the reason why people must not let their children have movie stars and singers as no role model. These people are so messed up and ungodly, it is appalling. They go out and because they have so much money and so much time on their hands, they go partying all the time, they drink and get drunk, they run around with a different partner very often, they say and do thing more frequently than the normal person. It goes to show that money cannot buy happiness, real happiness comes from our Creator. If these people do not acknowledge their Creator, then they have not respect for themselves or others. In hollywood, almost every second person does drugs. It is a sinful and disgusting place. The best thing Rihanna can do is move on with her life and give Chris the door. If he can start beating her and they are not married, what would happen when they do get married and are living together. Take this as a warning and leave while you can.

As a man I hate the fact that we as men think that we have the right to hit on women. When the good lord made women to be our helpmate I don't think that he wanted us to hit and beat on them the way some men do and those men make it hard on the good guys. I believe that laws have to be harder or put them in a room for 24hours with some of these ladies Fathers, Brothers and Uncles and see how they feel when someone hits on them? Shame on you Chris Brown no matter what she said or did...................

Before all the domestic abuse people jump on the bandwagon and get to flapping their gums, let's wait to see what really happened. There are three sides to every story (hers, his, and the real story).
Butt I will say this.... knew it was something strange about that girll......wouldn't have wanted her with my son.
Keeping you in my prayers, Chris.

Like any other celebrity he'll probably get off with probation and be fined. If it was anybody else they would get jail time and a huge fine and have to do community service. Nice to be a celebrity with lots of money

It's a shame that we live in a culture where people like Missy can blame it on, "knew it was something strange about that girl, " right after saying we should wait to hear the full story. Way to blame the (alleged) victim!
What woman did your son beat?
Sorry, but that's the only explanation I can think of to explain why you don't want all of us, "domestic abuse people" flapping our gums.
Posted by: ocg | February 09, 2009 at 07:50 AM
Even if he were an ordinary citizen, he would not get jail time. Probation and fines are typical for domestic violence cases.

I was very dissapointed to read of this information that chris and rihanna were involved with domestic violence in their relationship but on another site I read the alegations that fused chris brown to hit her is because she.... Gave him herpes but I myself do not know if these acussations are true on rihanna's part if it is true that is horrible if it's not my boy chris needs to get it together.

moy loy - granted its not good to do this kind of thing, but you think its only because they are in Hollywood? Please, this happens every.single.day. I hate the generalization that if you are a celebrity that you are all about drugs and nothing else.
I really can't see CB doing this. Then again, I have no reason to assume Rihanna is mentally unstable like some people have said.
I only wish both of them the best. But for all we know, this story is completely wrong, I prefer to wait for CB and Rihanna to release their own statements, hopefully they'll provide more insight instead of just a minute statement that doesn't really tell us anything.

Some of you people are perfect examples of non-educated, abuse supporters! You dont know Chris Brown or Rihanna but yet you act as though you were talking to them on the phone five minutes ago? It is so ridiculous how delirious some of you are. You have know idea what any person is capable of when pushed far enough. Not Chris Brown, not OJ, not Ike Turner right? So although you may idolize Chris Brown, that means nothing as far as what happened. Your opinion means nothing in the bigger picture. Someone was hurt last night and sustained VISIBLE bruises to the point where they could not go out in public. hmmmmm... let me think yeah that must mean she is making it up and "lying on him" along with police who did witness it. Please.... learn to speak and spell properly, take a self esteem lesson, find some other bad example to idolize, and get a life.
Posted by: Laila | February 09, 2009 at 08:29 AM
What a blessing, and a CURSE, it is to be young, popular and have TOO MUCH money & fame! My 12 yrs old daugther idolizes Chris Brown (in a good way). She has posters all over her wall and even named her bird, Chris Brown Jr. I pray that this youngman finds his strength to grow into his MANHOOD. I know in his book (of course, my daughter has it) he spoke about his father abusing his mother. This does not justify his actions, IF they are true. For, NO MAN should every strike a woman. And, NO WOMAN, should ever strike a man as well!!! Time will reveal the truth; and then again, maybe not....WE all know that the media is not always fair in it's news reporting! God Bless you, Chris!! God Bless you too, Rhianna!

ok first off i dont think chris brown hit rhianna.come on look at chris that boy wouldnt hurt a soul.i think rhianna jus wants a story, but then again i could be wrong.but do you really think chris brown would do such a thing? i love rhianna as a singer but i like chris brown more and its not just because hes handsome but because i knw he has a good heart.ok so what they got into an altercation..who doesnt get into one every now and then with their significant other?but rhianna probaly got into it with someone else and she was mad at chris and wanted to blame it on him because he pissed her off....get off my boy chris and try putting some of the blame on rhianna.
ill always have your back chris,

I think you guys are taking stuff way out of proportion! I am not saying that domestic violence is cool, but a person is innocent until proven guilty. We as people are so quick to judge and not know the facts. " We" were not there at the scene so "we" don't know what actually has taken place. "We" can only go by what the media tells us which is not always true. If Chris Brezee did what he did, shame on him! If Rhianna is lying or making a dramatic situation out of nothing, then shame on here. The truth will come out and for now people just chill out because you really don't know! So just remember we are all human and we all got skeletons in our closet. At the end of the day these people that are so called looked at as role models, but the real role models should be first your parents and then your school teachers, or grandparents.

WOW!
What are the times comming to? I know someone who is engaged to a man who recently put her in the hospital for 2 days behind physical abuse. She was so ashamed that she didn't tell anyone when she was admitted.
This story is not a new tale. I can give different theories about why men do it. However, a new found goal in my life is supporting these women, and making them to know that they DO NOT have to put up with it. (Teach them how to play GRIT BALL.....Madeea:).
Im sure Rhianna is done with that little boy.

I'm so dissapointed-I liked them as a couple. I recall Chris Brown revealing that for years his mother was a victim of brutal domestic violence (her boyfriend). Im hard pressed to beleive that he struck that young lady. I beleive the witness who says she initiated the physical violence.
Posted by: AMB | February 09, 2009 at 09:19 AM
Oh, Laila - everyone is entitled to their opinion, Just as you are of course, but there is no need to verbally abuse those individuals who do not share your view/opinion. The constitution says, "Freedom of Speech" as well as "Inocent until proven Guilty". It is nice to have a place where all can voice a point of view - without being called ignorant, uneducated....thats far to intense to be about this particular situation.
Posted by: AMB | February 09, 2009 at 09:29 AM
We don't know what occured because we were not there. Did she produce the wounds to hurt his career? She never wants to see him with another or talk to another. She thinks he's her property and wants to carry him like a purse, close to her side or under her arm.
Did she do these things to himself? She admitted in her song that she needed rehab. Facts maybe close to fiction. Remembering what he saw his mother go through as a child he could have left her doing the fight and turned himself in later. A MAN!
Were there any marks on him? Bite marks - possibly done by self or someone else. Did she get in a situation that she couldn't explain and covered it with a jacket? Hummmmmmm Time will tell. Let's keep them both in our prayers.

I think it is absolutely a shame that people are so quick to judge. Nobody knows the full story about what happened and you are already trying to throw the boy under a bus. If he hit her then he was wrong for that but I personally am going to wait to hear the whole story. You are fair weather fans is what it sounds like. There have been rumors circulating for the longest about how obsessed she is with him so you dont know what happened. Always throwing stones we you probably live in a glass house yourself!
Posted by: Keish | February 09, 2009 at 10:40 AM
You guys are hilarious... First off let that man be innocent until proven guilty. People are running wild with no facts... HOW LAME! How do we know that she did not attack him and he was protecting himself! Maybe she had a bruise on her arm because he was trying to restrain her from hurting him???? We do not know what happend! God grow up! I do not believe in domestic violence at all, but I also don't believe in breaking down someone else's character with our ignorance. It's funny how people were loving him yesterday and know he's this and that. WOW!
Posted by: Myi | February 09, 2009 at 10:54 AM
for those of you who defend Chris Brown w/o knowing if this is true or not...all i have to say is that you are TRULY ignorant. Lets be real for a sec...you dont know CB or Rihanna & i'm sorry to hit you with the reality stick...but he's not your husband or your baby's father, get with it. They're both very young & its a shame that domestic violence would be an issue in such a young relationship. I hope that the allegations are not true as i am a fan of both CB & Rihanna. & they are both idolized by childred and teens all over the world. Anyway, for those of you without one, i actually have a life. back to work = }

I love how people are quick to make racist comments and blame the ghetto for this situation. Domestic violence happens in the richest neighborhoods. Its not just a problem of the ghetto.

Posted by: random | February 09, 2009 at 11:09 AM
This is not about being 'quick to judge'. The facts are that he was accused of hitting a woman. The police confirm that there were visible marks on the woman. It does not matter if it were a celebrity woman or not.
NO MAN HAS THE RIGHT TO HIT A WOMAN !!!! A real man would walk away and deal with any situation later when cooler heads prevail.

Posted by: Johnson | February 09, 2009 at 12:33 PM
I'm really relived to hear the truth from the EYE witness whom made the 911 call. I'm an advocate for women and do not respect any man who beats on a woman, but clearly this isn't the case. People have their issues, we should all mind our own business and let them move on. Let's not speculate and judge. I wish them well, and I pray that they can both move on to bigger things, the're young and inexperienced so, please let them be. Our job is to enjoy the're work that's it. God bless you Chris, and Robyn hang in there. Keep giving us great music, focus on that!
Jah bless!

In this day and time when young people resort to violence instead of talking it out or walking away. They need to get a grip on real love instead tabloid love for the cameras.
Sometimes we let the movies give us ideas that fail or get us in trouble. It is never good for a man no mater his size or fame. But it's also not very lady like to provoke by mad pie whole flapping at him to get a rise of anger.
Part in words not threats or violence.
Unfortunately the media and tabloids are given these prime career keeping opportunities when incidents like this happen.
Stay away from each other and focus on your careers; what's left of them now.

Its sad that he would put his hands on her..if its getting that intense why not just tell her to get the hell out before you ruin your career...

I am sure there is some truth to this story. If the girl was hurt , that is sad.Mr.Brown must be charged to the fullest extent of the law.Now for the reality. This will get buried in the media mess where Mr.Brown wil get something like 3 months of porbation, and some civic duty. This is L.A. of course, even violent crimminals that are famous never really spend anytime in jail. Thanks to the whimpy judges and coniving attorneys for making L.A. one of the best places to commit a crime and really do no time.

I love Chris Borwn and everything, but this shows you how phony any famous person can be. They put on a mask so they can attract an audience and bask in their riches like its honest money. Its so ironic that he would even do something like this because I've watched and read many biographies, abd Brown has reported that he had to watch his mother be abused while he was a teenager. The fact that he could do this to another female bafflies me, however, that part in his life could be just another lie. I hope God leads him in a path to do good for himself, but I'm pretty sure he's going to lose an abundant amount of fans after this ordeal is settled and over with. A shame too, because he was an excellent performer. Truly.

Chris brown, Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress all got arrested and charged for committing crimes. MICHAEL PHELPS is still free despite being in possession of a prohibited substance. That's a crime too. Where is the DEA? America's tw-faced, apartherid-like justice system amazes me!

Rihanna or Brown could have lost their lives with such an altercation. I suggest they both move on..they are too young and work too hard in a fishbowl industry to have to suffer such indignity. I know they both need counselling and Miss Rhi Rhi "ain't no man or woman out there you cannot live without sugar! You are in my prayers as is Chris for he needs help just like you but you need help separately not as a couple - as the blows start the coupling should end. Years later you two kids might be friends but unless you both have a death wish End the Romance NOW!!

I think it's so ridiculous how people defend chris brown because they think he's cute, or that he's too nice and wouldn't hurt anyone.
How does anyone KNOW that he wouldn't do that? What do they have to base it on? Do they know him personally?
Also, saying that rihanna had it coming, or that "I knew there was always something strange about her" doesn't mean that chris's actions are justified if he did attack her.
Although no one knows the full story, I just feel sick reading comments that say she deserves it, or that chris couldn't possibly have done anything just because he seems nice/looks nice.

FAIR GAME? A person becomes an less than, dehumanized their right to privacy invaded by a desperate publication and it's all justified by calling the person FAIR GAME? What happened to integrity in journalism?
Actually, I feel sorry for both of them. I also hate all the speculation and judgment I see all over the blogosphere. From what I have seen and read about both of them, both have a history of parental partner or stepparental abuse in their respective families. I also know that some who have unresolved issues tend to manifest in their lives what they don't resolve. While there is never, ever an excuse for a man to hit a woman OR a woman to hit a man (no one really knows the details about who started the physical abuse here) we have to have compassion for how your past sometimes catches up with your present when you least expect it. Unfortunately, both will face the consequences and not know how they got to here.
Posted by: E Joyce | February 09, 2009 at 09:17 PM
ya'lll keep saying chris didn't do it and he's a good guy but who the hell hit rihanna if he didn't? Those bruises just didn't come up by itself, so how did they get there? She didn't put them there. So he had to hit her. I'm sadden they fault instead of working it out no matter who swung first but it was very immature and stupid. They should of thought twice about this before they fault, now look where they stand. God bless both of you and get better rihanna. She's to pretty to get beat on.
Posted by: shontiel | February 10, 2009 at 05:41 AM
I find it amazing that some people would say that IF this happened that Rihanna caused it. Even if she did something to provoke, that boundary should never have been crossed. WALK AWAY PEOPLE. I have been angry and angry enough to hit before but it's called self-control. As far as Chris being raised in an abusive home I'm so sorry for that but we all have the final decision on how to react. This goes for Rihanna also.

I just read on JustJared.com, Jared commented, "Hopefully all of this drama will fade away soon and Chris can get back to the stage and perform his heart out!".
This is one of the most serious issue women have been battling for generations. And perhaps it is people such as the blogger above, who appears to undermine this tragedy as being nothing, that fans the flame..

I hope that Rihanna leaves his PUNK *** She is a cute and talented woman. Rihanna don't need a lil boy like Chris Brown in her life anyway-who wants to lay his hands on her. He obviously has ANGER ISSUES and needs to go to Rehab (sound familiar). Rihanna you go girl & get yourself A REAL MAN!!

First of all no man has a right to hit a women, (all you women who comment stating poor Chris) does not deserve to be a women, please don't be that desperate for any man! No matter what she did, Chris be a man get your balls together & break up! If this is true Rihanna should dump him and press charges 100%!

i think that it is not like him to beat a woman and i think that if rihahnna swung at him first it is self defense even if he is a guy. I think that rihanna shouldn't have swung if she did and that Chris Brown didn't do what people believe to say that je did.
I Love Chris Brown and support him to the fullest of my potential. Hope this whole mess gets solved quick and that chris isn't charged for that much

I cannot believe that people are defending Chris Brown!
Some people with squeaky clean images are dirty on the inside.
Lots of people I know are like that .
(JUDY, IF YOUR READING THIS, I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU! THINK YOUR SO SMART? YOU MAKE PEOPLE CRY YOU BACKSTABBER!)
Now, I am a CB fan and I always got annoyed at Rihanna .
(cause she's dating CB, so you know it makes me mad)
But there is never ANY excuse to hit a woman. And Chris Brown is muscular. So yea! He coulda done it.
(~Muscular ~)
I think if Chris Brown is found guilty (HE WILL), the Rihanna should press charges on him, MAJOR charges. I'm sure this is true, because they didn't attend the GRAMMYS, dude, the Grammys!
If it wasn't really a big deal, I woulda gone straight to them Grammys.

Being a s though i was a victim of domestic abuse it is very hard to say he did it or not. Although I like chris brown and rhianna (the artist) I do no know them personally. Anything could have been said or done to provoke this matter. IIf rhianna initiated then shame on her, Chris brown should have been man enough to walk away from her. If chris brown initated it then shame on him, she is a women. My mother always told me that if you truly love or care about someone then you will not hurt them physically. She also said that if a woman doesn't want to get hit by a man she shoudn't hit a man and not expect consequences for her actions.

I believe that if indeed Chris Brown struck her that as a ROLE MODEL to teenage girls Rihanna must follow through with pressing charges otherwise she is sending a message that its ok to be abused. Who knows maybe this has gone on for a while started as verbal abuse, then mental abuse and finally physical abuse. It will probably be hard because of her public image and maybe the management team or label wont support her. But she is young and she will be ok and much more respected if she does follow through.

No one should comment as to what should happen to either of them. The story has not been clarified. NO one except for those involved knows what happened. Reputations are being tarnished and lives ruined because the media is SPECULATING. ALL OF THESE REPORTS ARE SPECULATION. The news stations are getting their information from TMZ (not a reputable source). Everyone needs to have an open mind. There are SOOOOO many different ways that this incident could have went. If you are really paying attention, a lot of the facts are not adding up. No one knows for a fact if the person is Rihanna, there have also been reports she was in a car accident. A lot of damage could be saved if everyone stops speculating and just sit back and wait for the story to unfold. We all know that it will unfold. NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE, BECAUSE NO ONE IS PERFECT.

Chris Brown messed up and hit that girl and it's the truth everyone it's not a lie people. No matter what she did a man should never hit a women and it's kinda funny cuz now every girl that's a fan of chris brown is making up any excuse in the world to make it seem ok or like it's her fault. It is never ok no matter what people. A women never deserves to get hit.

How can they panish Chris brown like that. Not that im defending him. But how many guys hit their patners every day and nor one is doing anything about it.
But because its Chris Brown they have to even go to an extend to hold his adverts.

Whether i believe it or not, it happened. People need to realise that Chris aint the first person to get in trouble, so why make it into a much bigger deal than it is?
Anyways whether or not he did it, im sure it aint any of my business so

ok. lets not run to conclusions. i love how people react and go, "shame on chris." its too early to know whether he did this or not. sure it totally seems like he could have. but the truth is that it is really easy to fabricate a good story these days using the media. so we'll see. give it time.

Well! Well! Well! I have read all comments on this page and here are some facts about your comments. First off a man young or old should never hit a woman and a woman should never lie about something as serious as this. Truth is our jails are filled with innocent men charged with somthing they did not do. So just because police confirmed it dose'nt mean it happen. "Domestic Vilence" is a weapon for some women, evil women, sick women these are the woman that make it hard for those who are really being abused. And about the rummors of why it happen if that is true, have you stopped to think of the bruises he woud have to live with for the rest of his life. And that is something that they both are to blame for. She is to blame for not sharing that information with him and he is to blame for not playing it safe at all times. So dont be quick to judge just pray for the two of them and ask yourself what would you do if it was you?

It is most unfortunate what has transpired between two talented young celebrities. I hope that they can work it out and apologize to one another, so that each can heal and move on. May God be with them both during this disturbing time in their young lives.

Honestly I think that people are jumping to conclusions way to fast..... Nobody knows the true story, so nobody has any room to judge.... Im not sayin that its right to hit a girl by no means..... But lets wait for the story before we have the comments....... Im not judging Chris at all, I dont have room to judge anyone..... I would love to know what has happened.... Honestly, I think people will be surprised!

CHRIS BROWN SHOULD BE THROWN INTO JAIL FOR A LONG TIME FOR BRUTTALLY ATTACKING IS NOW EX-GIRLFRIEND RIHANNA. THIS RELATIONSHIP HAS STARTED OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT AND THEN IT HAS JUST CRUMBLED DOWN LIKE A FALLING BUILDING. I AM PRAYING THAT RIHANNA WILL RECOOPERATE SOON AND FORGET ABOUT BROWN AND LIVE HER LIFE LONG AND WELL. THERE ARE PRETTY GOOD MEN IN THE SEAS FOR RIHANNA, BUT JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS, GO ON AND GET RID OF THE EVIL, LIFE THREATENING ONES. RIHANNA, I AM PRAYING THAT YOU WILL GET WELL SOON.

I HATE CHRIS BROWN

Regardless of what Rihanna may have done, Chris Brown still should have walked away. Men are naturally physically stronger than women so his punches would do more harm to Rihanna, than her punches would do to him.
No one knows the full story. As someone mentioned earlier, the only sides to the story are hers, his, and the truth. The truth will come out. If Chris Brown really did attack Rihanna, then it will come out.
I really feel sorry for both the victim and the attacker. Chris Brown could possibly ruin his career. I'm saying possibly, because there are still plenty of girls out here who are willing to buy his records despite the fact that he hurt Rihanna. There are still plenty of women who support R-Kelly despite the fact that he urinated on a minor. There are a lot of sick people out here folks.
As for the victim, Rihanna, I feel very sorry for her. I heard that she comes from a family where domestic violence took place. I'm pretty sure that she thought that with all the success she has made within the past few years, she would never face anything like this. It must have been a shock to her, especially to be attacked by someone she loved and trusted. I hope Rihanna can make a full mental as well as physical recovery from this. I hope that she can drop all emotional attachments to Chris Brown and leave him alone. She's a beautiful girl, she will find someone who is willing to love and respect her.
