Funeral set for officer killed by wrong-way driver

February 5, 2009 |  1:46 pm

Funeral services for the Culver City police officer who was killed by a wrong-way driver on the 10 Freeway are planned for Friday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

Sgt. Curtis Massey, 41, was driving to work Jan. 28 when he collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Van Nuys resident Luis Arnoldo Vanegas Palma, who was traveling west on the eastbound 10. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. and will be presided over by Cardinal Roger Mahony. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City immediately afterward.

Massey, who is survived by his wife and three young children, was a 17-year veteran of the department and was most recently assigned to the juvenile detective bureau. On behalf of Massey's family, the department has set up the Sgt. Curtis Massey Memorial Fund. Donations can be sent to Culver City Employees Federal Credit Union, 9770 Culver Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232.
