El Monte girl dies after TV set falls on top of her
A 6-year-old girl died from a head injury after a television set fell on top of her inside her El Monte home, authorities said today.
Kimberley Menjivar may have been reaching for something on a dresser Sunday when the bureau tipped forward and the 32-inch television on top of it slid off and hit her in the head, said Det. David Smith of the El Monte Police Department.
“She might have pulled out one of the bottom drawers to climb up, and when she did, it looks like the whole thing just started going forward,” he said.
A visiting relative sleeping in the bedroom woke up to find Kimberley on the ground with her head injured, Smith said. Kimberley's parents and brother were in the kitchen preparing breakfast at the time.
The girl was taken from her home in the 12000 block of Hallwood Drive to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, said Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Smith estimated the television weighed about 100 pounds and said El Monte police have received several reports over the years of children injured by television sets.
