Torrance officer shoots theft suspect

January 24, 2009 | 11:35 pm

A Torrance Police Department officer shot a person who was suspected of stealing from a Marshalls store Saturday tonight.

Police went to the Marshalls in the 19800 block of Hawthorne Boulevard shortly before 8:30 p.m. after employees reported seeing a group of people who had been suspected of stealing from the store earlier, said Sgt. Bernard Anderson. Officers arrived as the suspects were leaving and detained one of them, Anderson said.

The other escaped to a car being driven by another suspect, who then struck an officer with the vehicle while trying to flee. The officer fired at the car, Anderson said.

The suspects drove to 182nd Street and Prairie Avenue and fled the car. Police found one suffering from a non-fatal wound, but the other was still at large, Anderson said. Both the suspect and officer who had been hit by the car were taken to a local hospital, Anderson said.
