Cardinal Mahony under federal fraud probe over abusive priests, sources say [UPDATED]

Mahony The U.S. attorney in Los Angeles has launched a federal grand jury investigation into Cardinal Roger M. Mahony in connection with his response to the alleged molestation of children by priests in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the case.

The probe, in which U.S. Atty. Thomas P. O’Brien is personally involved, is aimed at determining whether Mahony, and possibly other church leaders, committed “honest services fraud” by failing to adequately deal with priests accused of sexually abusing children, said the sources, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

One federal law enforcement source said such a prosecution could be brought under a federal statute that makes it illegal to “scheme ... to deprive another of the intangible right of honest services.” In this case, the victims would be parishioners who relied on Mahony and other church leaders to keep their children safe from predatory priests, the source said.

Well all I will say is: if cardinal, bishop and priest would only folowed their concience and dignity they would of not be into this mess.... I myself got abuse by a similiar church call the renew church of Jesus Christ just because my parent dind't like what this monster among other was perpetrating agains the Holy Catholic Church. Well back in the year of the 60-70 they decided that the Church needed some tune up and be more moderm and socialist for the mentalities of a new generation. I supose that now over 40 year later most of the people do not recall what was this Church before these monster came along. I do not recall because I've never see what it was. It is about time that this empire is brought down to someting that will give faith hope and realitie not pure lie.... deception abuse ruse and despair.... How many of us ex victims and survivers as comideted or had the idea of suicide because not been able to adopt to the painfull realitie?....... This is what we have to concentrate our energies and focus in a sutiation like this.... Of course that do not justifie or give a green light to no body even goverment elect to profit or to use this bad behavior as an excuse or a token to agrivate this sick generation.... Yes justice must be serve but before it been impose I would think that every goverment oficial inplied into this should a least ask God for gidness and wisdowm..... It is not just O. K. to trow the stone at other without looking into our own problem and injustice.... This say I do not and I am not against any means or tool that could be use to brought to justice these filty animal that at time and place dind't care or ignore the concequance of their action..... There is some Law that God Himself instituded and commend us to folllow.... These cant not and should of not been broken for pleasure money and all power.... This is why justice must be serve for the victims and for the perpetrator..... I am sure that this whole situation and abomination will be brought to justice and just as lamp is made to be put into a well placement into an house to give light to it people this whole thing included the pope that we have now benedict the XVI should be all expose for who they are and what they did also expose and repremend so everyone is witness of it and by it way expose to true....

Is the Catholic Church above the law?

Priests got away with these crimes for decades knowing they wouldn’t be protected by the Church and the Mahony helped make it happen.

They would rather pay off victims than lock up these evil offenders to the tune of nearly 1.3 million per victim. To me this is a confession of guilt.

And, this isn’t a solution to the problem.

If would be much more cost effective if the Catholic Church built their own prisons. This would be a three-fold solution. It’s financially a better option (do the math), the Church would be accountable for these crimes, and justice would be served.

I have loved the Catholic church and its honest hardworking participants. However, Mahoney is a PROTECTOR of pedophiles and must be charged and jailed. Nothing else makes sense. Too bad the federal charge itself is so off the wall. (PS, did the Sri Lankan priest who gave brief silly sermons at the Incarnation Church in Glendale, CA ever get caught after escaping to Sri Lanka?) There are SO many wonderful Catholic parishioners and leaders, but Mahoney is definitely not one of them, he and many other higher ups who have protected criminals. Treat criminals like criminals.

Mahony is guilty of more than just covering for abusive priests(that is evil enough!!) BUT he is also not faithful to the Catholic Church and its teachings! Liberal with an agenda!

The prosecution and eventual incarceration of Cardinal roger Mahoney of Los angeles will NEVER NEVER happen. He is a liberal revisionist end product of Vatican 2 a pedophile protector and enabler with roots going back to the pink seminary in California St. John's.He has too many church and civil friends of his reactionary mindset still in power that will protect this pervert. Our only hope is that the incoming ArchBishop for Los Angeles who belongs to a progressive and Orthodox religious order Opus Dei will expose the 40 years of filth thieft and corruption of the leftist/fascist Soon to be the former Archbishop of LA Roger Mahoney.Christ demands the truth the new hopefully holy Opus Dei priest and archbishop of Los Angeles is answerable to NO LESS than the Messiah Jesus Christ himself for the abuse of little children under the watch of the revisionist roger mahoney
