Suspected drunk driver crashes into Santa Ana apartment

January 2, 2009 | 11:52 am

Accident

A suspected drunk driver crashed a pickup truck into a water main, a palm tree and finally into a Santa Ana apartment early this morning, narrowly missing the family of five sleeping inside, police said.

The accident occurred at Santa Ana Mini Storage, at 401 N. Fairview St., around 12:15 a.m., according to Santa Ana police Sgt. Richard Ashby. The manager of the storage business lives in an apartment on-site with his wife and three children.

The driver, 23-year-old Miguel Angel Diaz, was booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, driving without a license and for driving with an open container of alcohol, Ashby said.

The truck was heading south on Fairview when it veered over the raised medium, hit some water sprinklers and a palm tree, and crashed through a fence and into the apartment. No one was hurt, Ashby said.
