LAPD sports section

January 5, 2009 |  1:42 pm

Mongolian grand champion Hakuho, back, throws down Tochinoshin to win their bout on the ninth day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka, southwestern Japan, Monday, Nov. 17, 2008. Hakuho improved to 8-1 to keep his share of the lead in the 15-day tourney. As if there weren't enough websites to track your favorite sports and players, the Los Angeles Police Department announced today that it soon will unveil its own take on the wide world of sports at lapdonline.org

According to a department release, LAPD Sports will "showcase the accomplishments and stories of the many officers who excel in sports," including schedules, video highlights, pictures and special events.

Why the special sports section amid crime statistics and news? Because the department says "like you, cops like sports."

There are nearly 30 different team and individual sports to track, from football, basketball and baseball to motocross, power lifting, boxing and sumo wrestling.

No, we aren't kidding: sumo wrestling.
