Small plane crashes at Long Beach Airport

January 5, 2009 |  2:57 pm

A Cessna plane crashed this afternoon during takeoff from Long Beach Airport, officials said.

About 1:30 p.m., the plane veered off the left side of the runway, struck a helicopter and a hangar and caught fire, officials said.

The plane is owned by Torrance-based Temco Sky Network Service Inc., a spokeswoman said. The plane was flown by a student pilot -- the only person aboard the aircraft -- who suffered minor cuts and bruises, she said.

Federal Aviation Administration inspectors were on the scene.
