In Malibu, buzz about Fran Drescher's political future

10:45 AM | January 11, 2009

Actress Fran Drescher, best known as TV's "The Nanny," might run for the U.S. Senate -- in New York. This has been the buzz in Malibu, where the actress lives part time, and the Malibu Times sat down with her to discuss it:

While a media frenzy has erupted over the Senate's refusal to seat the governor of [Illinois'] appointment, Roland Burris, and Minnesota's Al Franken's confirmation is being held up by a challenge from his Republican opponent, actress Fran Drescher has used the media to test the waters for a U.S. Senate run representing New York. It is believed that Caroline Kennedy is the leading contender for Hillary Rodham Clinton's seat. Recent television and magazine interviews have created much speculation over Drescher's plans to run for the Senate seat. However, Drescher, who owns a home in Malibu, said Tuesday in an interview with the Malibu Times that the publicity is a way of putting her "toe in the water" should she choose to run in 2010. "I've been told by very high level U.S. senators that I should run for the Senate, and that I'd be great in the Senate," Drescher said.

Who's this Brady Wastewater? A screenwriter, how original! What restraurant are you working at?

From the headline, I had assumed you were talking about running for Malibu CIty Council. But, as it turns out, she's only thinking about running for the United States Senate, which is good. A couple terms there might toughen her up enough to get involved in Malibu politics.

I'm sure she's very nice and all, but trust me, no one in Malibu gives a dead rat about Fran Drescher or her political ambitions. First of all, she is reported to be a "part-time" resident. This means she lives or more accurately visits Malibu ensconced in the Malibu Colony, a high-priced prison for smug Hollywood morons who only venture out to go to one of our few over-priced restaurants. She is part of the self-absorbed population that contribute ZERO to our town. I have never seen her at a planning commission, city council meeting or any other function where she might actually have even the tiniest impact on our community. She's never written a letter to the editor, been to the Malibu Township Council, the PTA anything. Go away, go away from Malibu all you self-involved Hollywood scum, please. Unless you actually want to help Malibu with our various problems and civic challenges.

Drescher would be GREAT. Kennedy was wonderful in New York's education and the city government and her books and commitment to kids but I don't think she has anything like the requisite strength for this kind of role.
It's brave but it's a bit late and fetching for something to say to come up with '9-11 got me involved.'
As a former New Yorker who lived through that time, I think Drescher's got the guts and the fire in her that New York needs and I hope she goes for it.

Florida has an open Senate seat in 2010. She should have at it. We plan to have an incumbent Democrat here in NY.

What is with all these people thinking they can become something without doing any work or having any experience beforehand? If you want to be a Senator, then work for it. Become a councilperson, then mayor, then continue to work your way up so you'll actually be useful when you get to the Senate.

I was just forced to take my first furlough day last week because the City claims it has no money. Now...it's okay for the City to foot the bill for a public memorial for Michael Jackson?
