Police probing brawl at Del Amo shopping mall

2:26 PM | January 12, 2009

Authorities are trying to get to the bottom of the South Bay mall brawl.

Eight people were arrested at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance over the weekend after a crowd of 300 to 400 people gathered outside a movie theater to watch a fight between two women.

When police arrived to break up the battle Saturday night, friends of the combatants began fighting with officers, Torrance police Sgt. Bernard Anderson said.

Most of the people in the crowd were just watching, Anderson said, but because of the size of the group all available Torrance units were called, 15 to 20 officers.

They then called for help from officers from Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Gardena, El Camino College and El Segundo.

Six adults and two juveniles were arrested and booked on charges of assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. Two Torrance officers were injured, Anderson said. One was hit in the face, and the other hurt his knee.

The fight between the two women began as an argument over clothes, Anderson said.

Torrance is in no way "ghetto". I lived in South Torrance for 14 years, not an ounce of crime that i've ever encountered. Maybe they shouldn't have closed Hawthorne mall, and other malls in those areas, so people from those areas aren't flocking to Torrance/Redondo malls. Now i live in NORTH LONG BEACH, want to talk about ghetto.. you haven't seen anything until you compare these two areas. Torrance is an all around awesome place to grow up and raise a family, I plan on returning as soon as I can.

Ummm, Torrance is ghetto? Compared to what, Beverly Hills? Torrance is mostly upper middle class, just east of Redondo Beach. It's one of the safest places you can be. You can't go anywhere without seeing Torrance police on patrol. And by the way, the people who were involved in this brawl weren't necessarily from Torrance. People come from elsewhere to shop there. The fact is that when a lot of young people get together on a Saturday night, sometimes things happen. It doesn't matter where you're at.

Asian girls are the best. Torrance is not ghetto.

wooow.. i live in torrance and torrance isnt getto at ALL!! i used to live in downtown LA and then i moved to Torrance.. Torrance is da most asian place you can BE! its trueee.. and it WASNT 400 to 500 people.. it was onlye around 100.. i was there. that article is whack...

umm excuse me i was there at the mall when the whole thing happen and it was not no 300 to 400 people it was only bout 100 to 150 of us. they need to go somewhere with all of that but lol that was funny when the whole thing happen

Will the last decent person leaving the cultural and socio-economic cesspool that Torrance and many parts of the South Bay is rapidly becoming, please turn off the lights ?

We are losing our towns. We are losing our county. We are losing our state. We are losing our COUNTRY.

After 9-11, we united, and turned on the terrorists overseas. After economic chaos of our OWN making, I fear many will turn ON EACH OTHER here.

and where the hell do you 2 ignorant stoops live?!?!?

omg i know them..lol we aint ghetto

Torrance didn't used to be this ghetto...First, the Redondo Galleria, now Del Amo. What's left? Better go to Manhattan Beach Mall while you still can!

SeanJean,

you are 100% right ! I drove to Torrance for an appointment and I felt the vibe.

G H E T T O ......

And Del Amo mall is low rent.

Animals would have more civility than the riff raff in Torrance and the surrounding area. You're taking your life in your own hands by going out at night in that area.

I was just forced to take my first furlough day last week because the City claims it has no money. Now...it's okay for the City to foot the bill for a public memorial for Michael Jackson?
