DNA break brings arrest in 20-year-old murder mystery

January 12, 2009 |  8:23 pm

Los Angeles police detectives said today they had made an arrest in the nearly 2-decades-old rape and murder of an 82-year-old woman, thanks to new DNA evidence.

On Feb. 26, 1990, Alma Harvey was found raped and strangled at her house in the 800 block of East 32nd Street in Los Angeles. During the initial crime scene investigation, homicide detectives discovered physical evidence left behind by the unknown suspect.

This physical evidence revealed a DNA profile that was eventually entered into a Department of Justice “CODIS” system. On Jan. 5, a DNA “cold hit” notification was made on Isidro Ponce, authorities said.

Ponce, 48, was arrested on suspicion of Harvey's slaying. He is being held without bail, awaiting trial.

There are two things I do not believe. Claims of a DNA match that would require several planets when I know there are 13 of 13 in the California system. The other is a claim aof a DNA match when they do not say how many loci they found. Not all DNA matches have the same quality and they have already tried to claim a match at five of 13.
