A motorcyclist struck and killed a pedestrian who ran across the 710 Freeway in Long Beach early this morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision was reported shortly after midnight on the southbound side near the 405 Freeway, said Officer Jennifer Connolly, a CHP spokeswoman. It was not immediately clear why the pedestrian had wandered onto the freeway, she said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The man on the motorcycle suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Connolly said. All lanes on the southbound 710 were closed until just after 4 a.m.
