Octuplets 'doing amazingly well'

Callout

Doctors who delivered octuplets to a Southern California woman said the eight babies are doing fine and the mother is resting comfortably in stable condition.

"The babies had a very good night," said Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center who helped deliver the babies Monday night. He added that their vital signs remain stable and that the two babies on breathing tubes were taken off them this morning. Those two babies and a third are being given oxygen through their noses, he said.

"They're doing amazingly well," he said of the eight, noting they began feeding today and are kicking their legs.

The two girls and six boys are in incubators; their mother hasn't been with them since their birth, but she has seen pictures of them, doctors said. Tonight, she will be able to touch them for the first time, doctors said.

The hospital is not releasing any information about the mother, who is likely to be discharged in a week.

"We're very fortunate that the patient was extremely strong," said Dr. Karen Maples, chief of service, obstetrics and gynecology.

Doctors said the mother knew at 23 weeks that she was going to have seven babies. Neither she nor her doctors knew she was carrying eight babies until she delivered Monday night.

"We were very fortunate to get to 30 1/2 weeks, said Dr. Harold Henry, the hospital's director of maternal and fetal medicine.

Yeah, did ya know she had 6 kids? That makes 14

Listen folks, these whack-jobs are messing with the human genome. Do you think these children are going to be NORMAL? This is the equivalent of Frankenstein experiments, and we all should have a say in this. We're letting fertility specialists who don't have a clue about genetics mess with our gene pool.

This should be STOPPED.

And we should definitely stop glorifying these freakazoids and giving them TV Shows. Anyone that crazy is going to be a crazy parent and have crazy kids.

Don't we have enough crazy people in the world?

I think as well it was irresponsible on her behalf. Children are a blessing yes.....given I do not know the womens circumstances fully, it says she and her previous six children live with her parents. I am not sure if she is married or not, but with six children previously do you really need to use fertility drugs when you already have six...now she has 14! That is a little extreme. I am a single mom to one......would I like to have more children.. YES. But I am a responsible and sensable women and know it is not in the childs best intrest to continue to have children. We are not on any government benefits and I do not want to have to put ourself in a position were we are depenedent on them. SO I will make the responsible choice of not continuing to have children until I am in a position to afford them. I think this women should have made the same choice and not use fertility drugs after having 6! But the babies are here so I hope they are blessed and are given good lives and do not have to go without! Hopefully they will not suffer for their moms choices.

I think that there is something psychologically wrong with this woman and her family that choose to take it upon themselves to populate the earth. I think the state authorities should look into the welfare of these and the other children in the houshold. What would possess some woman to have that many children and to want InVitro when she already has 6?! That is insane. She should be evaluated. The doctors who agreed to do the procedure should be disciplined in some way. It is no way humanly possible that this woman can provide 14 children with the care and attention that they need. I have not heard one mention of a husband, boyfriend, or anyone of that nature. This is truely sad! I feel so sorry for those children and the mother. She is clearly trying to fill some void that's the size of the black hole.

Life is sacred and children are blessings, however, parents have a responsibility to provide for their children emotionally and financially. According to the USDA, in 2001 the cost of raising a child for a dual parent family earning between $39K and $66K per year was approximately $9,500 per year from birth to age 18. Today, the cost per year per child is estimated at $11K. It is unlikely the mother of 14 children will find the time to feed, bathe and diaper her offspring while at the same time earning the $2.15 million per year she will need to financially support them. Based on the information known to date about the family and the mother, it seems the American taxpayers, not the parents, will bear the financial burden of these sacred blessings.

I agree with those who feel this mother and doctor who gave the fertility treatments acted irresponsibly. A 33 year old with 6 kids under age 8 appears to be fertile to me. What is wrong with her that she would want more than 6 kids especially since there is not even a father to help raise them? I think she should concentrate on raising those 6 and not trying to have many more! I read in the paper today that the mother previously had a psych tech license. How scary is that? Even if she has Kaiser medical insurance, aren't there limits in lifetime coverage?
As a taxpayer I do not want to spend one dime to help such foolish people especially since my job is in jeopardy in these tough economic times. This mother must have her head in the sand. She must have conceived last year when the grandmother was reported to have tried to file for bankruptcy. This story just makes me crazy, not jubilant at the "miracle "of their birth.

Who is the biological father of these babies(and the other 6 children at home)? Why would a "real " man agree to bringing so many children into the world under these circumstances? Is he going to step up and help raise them? Since he is not married to the mother or living with her I suspect the answer is NO. Talk about a breakdown in family values. That is an understatement in this case.

How do you know that "THEY WILL SUFFER FOREVER FROM THIS "COMPLICATION" OF FERTILITY DRUGS"? WHO MAKES YOU GOD TO SAY THIS? There are plenty of families that have 10 or more children are doing just fine. These families don't have to live off the welfare system to survive. One of these children could one day be the next President of the US. Look at Barack Obama.

Lynne A

You stated, “Talk about a breakdown in family values. That is an understatement in this case."

Do you know this family personally and have all the facts in this case? If you don't, HOW DARE YOU MAKE A COMMENT ABOUT A BREAKDOWN IN FAMILY VALUES.

Get the facts before you judge this family. All you have is information you have read or seen about them.

WHAT THE HELL DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH IF THEY ARE US CITIZENS?

OUR COUNTRY GIVES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO OTHER COUNTRIES. CELBRITIES GIVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO OTHER COUNTRIES FOR STARVING PEOPLE.

WHAT THE HELL DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH IF THEY ARE US CITIZENS?

Questions! $168.000 for Workman Comp disability for a back injury? Did she fleeced the State of Calif. Worker's Comp? How can a women who claims back injury have so many babies within seven years? The State of Calif should investigate. No wonder we're in a financial fiasco!

IT TRULY IS A MIRACLE THAT THOSE BABIES ARE DOING WELL. BUT IN THE SAME SINCE IT IS EXTREMELY SAD THAT ONE WOMAN IS GOING TO HAVE TO RAISE 14 CHILDREN. I HAVE TWO KIDS AND MARRIED AND IT IS STILL AT TIMES OVER WHELMING. SHE DEFINATLEY HAS A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO. WITH THE UP ROAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT HELPING HER. I AM ALL FOR GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE IF AND WHEN YOU NEED IT. EVERYONE STRUGGLES BUT I AM FIRMLY BELIEVEING THAT THAT LADY WILL NEVER GET OFF WELFARE. 14 KIDS ARE VERY VERY COSTLY AND NO ONE WOMAN CAN NOT AFFORD THAT. EVEN IF SHE HAD A HUSBAND THAT COST IS STILL TO MUCH. THE GOVERNMENT REGULATES SO MUCH BUT THERE NEEDS TO BE A LAW ABOUT "SETTING YOURSELF UP" FOR FAILURE. SHE CAN NOT DO IT ALONE AND NEVER WILL BE ABLE TO. NO ONE BEING ON STUDENT LOANS NOR THE AMOUNT OF INCOME SHE IS HOPING FOR CAN EVEN STILL AFFORD THAT MANY KIDS PLUS DAILY EXPENSES. I THINK THAT HAVING THAT MANY KIDS CAN OBVIOUSLY LEAD TO SOME TYPE OF NEGLECT. I TRULY THINK SHE IS NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO CARE OF ALL THOSE KIDS BEING IN THE RIGHT STATE OF MIND. HELL, I GET A LITTLE TIRED WITH 2 KIDS, I CAN NOT IMAGINE 14!!! IT IS ALMOST STUPIDITY.... HECK IT IS.. ALONG WITH SELFISHNESS. THOSE KIDS NEED LOVING PARENTS AND THERE IS NOT ONE PERSON ALONE THAT CAN TEND FOR THAT MANY KIDS ESPECIALLY WITH ALL 14 KIDS BEING SO YOUNG. SHE SHOULD BE SUPERVISED CAREFULLY BY DHS AND EVALUATED BY A SHRINK... THERE HAS TO BE MENTAL ISSUES.SHE SHOULD BE FORCED TO PUT THOSE KIDS UP FOR ADOPTION. I KNOW PLENTY OF PEOPLE WHO WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THEM.

I think she'll get her book deal and public appearances and she and the kids will all be okay. It's a little different than what most would do but that's her right! We may not agree with the doctor's decisions but I'd like to see how this story progresses before passing judgment.
