1 student dead, 4 hurt as van crashes into bus stop in South Gate

December 1, 2008 |  5:05 pm

One student was killed and four others were injured this afternoon when a van crashed into a bus stop near South Gate Middle School.

The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. near Otis Street and Firestone Boulevard just as school was letting out, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and South Gate Police Department.

The van apparently lost control and crashed into the stop, where several students were waiting. Five students were hit, and one 14-year-old boy died, a fire inspector said. The others were taken to local hospitals, and their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Officials said the area is usually filled with children at that hour because it is home to the middle school and South Gate High School.

TV footage showed debris, school items and some shoes next to the bus stop where the accident occurred.

This sentence is confusing: "Officials said the area is usually filled with children at that hour because it is home to the middle school and South Gate High School."

South Gate Middle School on Otis and Firestone is not near South Gate High School (at least a twenty minute walk apart) . South East Middle School and South East High School in South Gate are next to each other (share the same home), but are on Tweedy Blvd.

Time to ban minivans. Who really needs a multipassenger automatic assault vehicle? For those who claim to "need" such a device, is it worth the carnage? Ban all vans now!

"The van apparently lost control"? What lousy writing! Vans can't lose control--they don't have it. The driver "lost" control, or more accurately, surrendered control of the van by going too fast or not paying attention.

Keep the vans; fire the writer.
