Chow chow gets out of a messy situation

December 2, 2008 |  7:59 am

Here's a messy job that ended up saving the day.

Los Angeles County firefighters hoisted a 30-pound chow chow from an unused septic tank Monday after the dog fell 12 feet into the open tank.

The pooch took the plunge shortly before 1:30 p.m. at 3555 Shaw Ranch Road, which is in unincorporated county territory between the Angeles National Forest and Pasadena. Firefighters with the department's urban search and rescue team responded, and one of them climbed down into the tank and lifted the animal out.

The owner was taking it to the vet to check out a possible broken leg or hip.
